China's Parallel Online Universe

An anonymous reader writes "China is increasingly operating an online parallel universe where social media clones 'mimic the functions of the most popular, internationally recognized social media applications, such as Facebook and Twitter. The replicas, however, come with a major catch: they systematically comply with the Chinese Communist Party?s strict censorship requirements.' They are satisfying the growing demand of hundreds of millions of Chinese citizens for social media tools, reducing incentives for them to circumvent the 'Great Firewall,' Freedom House warns. Testing by researchers found that a search for the names of seven prominent Chinese lawyers, activists, and journalists on Sina Weibo returned no results, only an Orwellian notice that 'According to related laws and policy, some of the results are not shown here.'"

Apple in 2012: Siri-Powered Television, iPad 3, iPhone 6 and More

Few companies manage to create such a whirlwind of rumour and speculation around fictional products like Apple does, and 2011 proved to be a rumour-packed year.

With 2012 on the horizon, the International Business Times UK looks into its crystal ball to see what objects of geeky desire Apple will treat us to over the next 12 months.

Like us on Facebook

As with previous generations, the new iPad will have a faster and more powerful processor - to be called the A6 - which will see the iPad reclaim the top step of Apple's iOS podium, followed by the A5-powered iPhone 4S.

Apple isn't expected to change the iPad design much, although it could become slightly thicker because of an extra LED backlight behind the shiny new retina display.

A rumour that circulated several months ago - but has since all-but died - is the prospect of an iPad mini. With a 7-inch screen the iPad mini would be nearly three inches smaller than its bigger brother and could take the fight to Amazon and its bargain-basement Kindle Fire tablet.

The iPhone 5 was put on such an enormous pedestal that punters could be forgiven for thinking that the fictional device would swoop down from the heavens, cure every known disease and fix the economy; all before breakfast. But what we got was the iPhone 4S, a seemingly minor update to the 4 with a not-so-intelligent personal assistant called Siri.

Our International Business Times UK crystal ball predicts that the next iPhone will arrive sometime in the third quarter of 2012, but specific details are few and far between. As the iPhone 4S was an update to the 4 - as the 3GS was to the 3G - it stands to reason that the next model (called either iPhone 5 or iPhone 6) will feature a major design update.

Like those relatives who hang around a little too long after Christmas dinner, talk of an Apple television refuses to go away; the mystery device was even offered a second helping of dessert after it was mentioned in Steve Jobs' biography, published in October.

Biographer Walter Isaacson wrote that Jobs has "cracked" the future of television, which would offer "the simplest user interface you could imagine."

Apple has sold a set-top box - the Apple TV - for several years, but sales initially struggled, prompting Jobs to call the device a "hobby". Sales picked up after the second generation model was launched - letting users stream iTunes content from their Mac and online to their television - but an actual television produced by Apple would be something entirely new.

Rumoured to be available in 32- and 37-inches, the Apple television could arrive towards the end of 2012, although reports this week claim of a second or third quarter release date.

With major updates to its iOS lines expected, and an entirely new product tipped to enter the market soon, 2012 is set to be a busy year for Apple; and these products will, of course, rely heavily on iTunes and the AppStore to provide content, and the iCloud to allow device-wide syncing.

Iraqi interpreters for U.S. military in dangerous limbo

Reporting from Baghdad?

He rarely leaves his house. He's been shot at by gunmen in a passing car. He gets death threats over the phone.

"Traitor," the callers say. "American agent."

Tariq, 27, is a quick-witted, tech-savvy Iraqi who tosses off idiomatic American English phrases such as "I'm outta here" and "That's cool."

When he served as an interpreter for the U.S. military, Tariq lived on a secure base, safe from fellow Iraqis determined to kill him because of his service to America. But when the unit he served pulled out of Iraq on Oct. 13, he was dismissed and escorted off the base.

The U.S. government promised Tariq and thousands of other former interpreters that they would be first in line for special visas to the United States. But with the pace of visa approvals having slowed to a crawl, that promise rings hollow for Tariq, who stays locked in his parents' home, working the phones and the Internet to track his application.

For the first time since his work as an interpreter ended, Tariq left his home one day this month and drove through Baghdad to meet a reporter. He brought along his brother, a tall, burly fellow who literally watched Tariq's back with each step. Tariq asked that his surname not be published.

"I served the Americans very well, but now they've left me on my own, with no security," he said in nearly flawless English. "They've expelled us all from the only places in Iraq that were safe for us ? U.S. bases."

The visa process, always slow and cumbersome, has bogged down further since two Iraqi refugees were arrested in Kentucky in May on federal terrorism charges that included providing material support in the U.S. for Al Qaeda.

With empty hours to fill each day, Tariq has become an expert on U.S. immigration policy toward Iraq. He can quote legislation and recite testimony from congressional hearings and obscure federal documents.

Three words from U.S. legislation are imprinted on his brain: "special immigrant visa." The Refugee Crisis in Iraq Act, passed in 2008, provided fast-track status for Iraqis who had worked for the U.S. government or military.

The law authorized 5,000 special visas per year ? 20,000 through 2011. But through October, just 3,415 had been issued to Iraqis, according to the Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project.

The State Department says 7,362 Iraqis who worked for the U.S. have received special visas over that period, but that total includes family members.

Through July, 62,500 Iraqis had applied through the special visa program, though many have given up and dropped out.

Applicants have been told to expect waits of at least eight months. Tariq applied two years ago, then filed an amended application in October 2010.

A U.S. Embassy official in Baghdad, speaking on condition he not be identified, acknowledged "unfortunate delays" in issuing special visas, the result of enhanced security clearance procedures, some instituted after the Kentucky arrests. But he said recent changes would speed the process.

The State Department's National Visa Center has been ordered to flag special visa applications for expedited action, the official said. And a requirement that Iraqi applicants provide an original signature on certain forms sent to the U.S. has been dropped after Iraqis complained of logistical difficulties.

"We are making changes, ordered at the very highest levels, that will help shave time off the application process," the official said.

In the meantime, thousands of former interpreters have been cast adrift, threatened by insurgents as they wait for the federal bureaucracy to act.

Interpreters provided vital support to American forces, offering valuable insights into Iraqi customs and tribal rivalries. They accompanied U.S. troops on combat patrols, braving the same roadside bombs and insurgent attacks. Many were killed in combat, or executed after leaving their military jobs.

Jerry's most-used apps of 2011

Apps, yo.

I'm not a big app guy, I'll admit.  I like to check them out, and maybe even keep them around for a week or so, but there's just a few I keep around forever.  I do happen to like buying them and checking them out, though, so I go through a lot of them.  Here's my list of "keepers." Check them out after the break.

(AP) ? Authorities in Iran said Sunday they are again moving ahead with plans to execute a woman sentenced to death by stoning on an adultery conviction in a case that sparked an international outcry, but are considering whether to carry out the punishment by hanging instead.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is already behind bars, serving a 10-year sentence on a separate conviction in the murder of her husband. Amid the international outrage her case generated, Iran in July 2010 suspended plans to carry out her death sentence on the adultery conviction.

On Sunday, a senior judiciary official said experts were studying whether the punishment of stoning could be changed to hanging.

"There is no haste. ... We are waiting to see whether we can carry out the execution of a person sentenced to stoning by hanging or not," said Malek Ajdar Sharifi, the head of justice department of East Azerbaijan province, where Ashtiani is jailed.

"As soon as the result (of the investigation) is obtained, we will carry out the sentence," he said, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The charge of a married woman having an illicit relationship requires a punishment of stoning, he said.

He said judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani ordered a halt to stoning in order to allow Islamic experts to investigate whether the punishment can be altered in Ashtiani's case.

Ashtiani was convicted of adultery in 2006 after the murder of her husband.

She was later convicted of being an accessory to her husband's murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

No. 14 Xavier tops So. Illinois 87-77 in Hawaii

(AP) ? Tu Holloway scored 21 points and No. 14 Xavier ended a three-game losing streak with an 87-77 victory over Southern Illinois on Sunday in the seventh-place game of the Diamond Head Classic.

Before a sparse, morning crowd on Christmas Day, the Musketeers won for the first time since Dec. 10, when they beat Cincinnati in a game cut short in the closing seconds by brawling and mayhem on the court.

This was the first three-game losing streak for Xavier under coach Chris Mack and first since the 2007-08 season.

Mark Lyons scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Musketeers (9-3). Andre Walker and Travis Taylor added 13 apiece for Xavier, which made 35 of 44 free throws. The Salukis (3-8) were led by Dantiel Daniels' 22 points.

Southern Illinois cut it to 68-64 at 8:45 after a 3-point play by Daniels, but an 8-1 run gave the Musketers a 9-point cushion.

50 Cent Performs With Astro, L.A. Lakers on X Factor Finale

Rapper 50 Cent, never one to be accused of family friendly entertainment, saw half of his performance bleeped out, but still rocked the house on The X Factor finale.

Astro may not be the inaugural X Factor winner, but the young rapper did make his way onto the finale, rapping alongside Fiddy. That's a feat in and of itself!

Also, L.A. Lakers guard Derek Fisher introduced Mr. Cent, his good friend, and other Lakers - Matt Barnes and Steve Blake - also made it up on stage somehow.

We can't explain it either. Just watch the performance below.

In case the censoring rendered it all unclear, 50 performed his latest single "Wait Until Tonight" followed by his 2003 smash hit, "In Da Club," featuring Astro.

The kid's got game ... unlike Barnes, Blake and Fisher, who just waved their arms a lot ... with Kobe Bryant hurt, maybe they're getting in shape to play extra minutes?

PFT: Barkley taking big risk by delaying NFL move

New York Giants v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

Since 2006, the league has been using a flexible schedule on Sunday nights to ensure that a competitive and interesting game always will occupy the prime-time slot.? In most weeks of flex scheduling, the decision comes at least 12 days before the games are played.? For Week 17, the decision usually is made after the full Week 16 slate of games has been played, and it?s unveiled no later than six days before the final Sunday.

Unlike all other weeks of flexible scheduling, no game has even tentatively been placed in the 8:20 p.m. ET time slot.? Instead, all games have a 1:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. local time kickoff (for three games due to start at 4:15 p.m. ET, it?s a 1:15 p.m. local start), and the NFL will choose one of those 16 games to be the final act of the regular season, since no Monday night game is played in Week 17.

The goal every year becomes finding a game with clear playoff implications that can?t be resolved based on the outcomes of games played earlier in the day.? And that?s not always an easy thing to do.

Last year, only the Seahawks and Rams provided a clear-cut pre-playoff game, with the winner capturing the NFC West and the loser being bounced from the postseason field ? regardless of the final score of any other game played that day.

This year, a game with obvious playoff implications regardless of what happens elsewhere could be hard to find.? Here?s a quick glance at the potential relevance of each game.

Redskins at Eagles:? Since Philly?s shot at winning the NFC East would hinge (if it survives Week 16) on the Giants beating the Cowboys, this game could be irrelevant.

Lions at Packers:? Green Bay?s clinching of the top seed, if they don?t have it after this weekend, would come if the 49ers lose to the Rams in Week 17.? Also, losses by other teams would deliver a Detroit playoff berth, if Detroit doesn?t clinch it this weekend.? Then again, whether the Packers have the No. 1 or No. 2 seed really isn?t that big of a deal in the grander scheme of things.

Ravens at Bengals:? Depending on the Week 16 games, this game could have implications for the AFC North title, the No. 2 seed, and the final wild-card berth.? But those implications could become irrelevant based on the other games played in Week 17, which makes this game less attractive for prime time.

Jets at Dolphins:? Again, Week 16 will provide more clarity.? With the Jets and Bengals each 8-6, however, it?s unlikely that the Jets will have a clear win-and-in, lose-and-leave scenario that would apply regardless of what the Bengals do against the Ravens.

Panthers at Saints:? New Orleans could be playing for the No. 2 seed and/or the NFC South crown, but those could be decided via losses earlier in the day by the Falcons or the 49ers.

Buccaneers at Falcons:? If the Falcons still haven?t clinched a playoff berth after Monday night, losses by others could deliver the spot earlier in the day on January 1.

49ers at Rams:? San Fran is jockeying for the No. 2 or No. 1 seed, which if still relevant after Week 16 could be completely irrelevant before 8:20 p.m. ET in Week 17.

Bills at Patriots:? The Pats are playing for the top seed, but the outcomes of the Steelers and Ravens games could strip this one of any remaining relevance.

Colts at Jaguars:? It?s very highly unlikely that the league would want to showcase the ?Suck for Luck? finale.? In 2008, for example, the NFL had no interest in televising in prime time the Lions? date with 0-16 destiny.

Titans at Texans:? Houston has an outside shot at a bye, but it will depend on the Steelers and Ravens games from earlier in the day.

Bears at Vikings:? This one would be attractive in prime time only for anyone who stayed up too late and drank too much on New Year?s Eve and doesn?t want to miss anything important.

Cowboys at Giants:? If the Giants beat the Jets on Saturday, the NFC East likely will hinge on this game, with the loser most likely being done.? It could be one of the best candidates for the prime-time slot, based on the clarity provided by Week 16.

Steelers at Browns:? Um, no.

Chiefs at Broncos:? The Broncos definitely will win the AFC West by beating the Chiefs.? The only problem is that the Broncos could nail it down before 8:20 p.m. ET on January 1, making the game irrelevant.

Seahawks at Cardinals:? It could be one of the best games of the day.? But it very likely will have zero relevance to the postseason.

Chargers at Raiders:? With the Broncos able to win the division by beating the Chiefs, there?s no reason to hold this one ? unless somehow it would present a clear-cut win-and-in for a wild-card berth for one of the two teams.

And so, for now, it appears that the best candidates are Cowboys-Giants and Chiefs-Broncos.? We?ll know more by Monday night.

In the end, there?s a chance that the NFL will simply have to assume a calculated risk that one or more of the outcomes earlier in the day will screw up the New Year?s Night party on NBC.

U.S. economy hopes lift European stocks (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A better outlook for the U.S. economy boosted European stocks and supported the euro on Friday, but any gains in the holiday-thinned markets are likely to prove short-lived with concerns about the euro zone debt crisis undiminished.

U.S. stock index future pointed to Wall Street edging higher and extending a rally into a fourth session, as a report that the Federal Reserve could hold rates down for longer than previously expected fuelled the upturn in sentiment.

But euro zone fears kept a lid on any optimism.

"There's no doubt that events in the euro area in the first quarter of next year... have the potential to have a profound impact across the globe," said Chris Scicluna, an economist at Daiwa Capital Markets.

The single currency was up around 0.2 percent for the day at $1.3075, holding above a recent 11-month low of $1.2945. It is however down around 2.1 percent on the year.

"The dollar is still seen as a funding currency when risk appetite improves and people will sell dollars on the back of that," said Chris Walker, currency strategist at UBS.

"But we still see uncertainties in the euro zone outweighing, and look for a move towards $1.25 in the next few months."

The Wall Street Journal said late on Thursday the Federal Reserve could commit to keeping rates near zero right out to 2014. The report said the Fed could announce the decision at its next policy meeting on Jan 24-25.

On Thursday the U.S. reported the lowest level of weekly jobless claims since April 2008 [ID:nL1E7NLBBS] while the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index showed a rise. [ID:nL1E7NM1RL]

"This improved set of data we've had through Q4 in the U.S. is at least something to be encouraged about," said Daiwa's Scicluna.

Congress, after months of bitter infighting, is poised on Friday to pass a payroll tax cut extension that President Barack Obama argues is vital to the health of the economy.

MSCI's world equity index gained around 0.4 percent since the data was published (.MIWD00000PUS), but remains on track for a fall of about 12 percent in 2011.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index gained around 0.8 percent in anemic volumes. Banks were among the big gainers, extending a timid pre-Christmas rally after a dismal year, with Banco Santander (SAN.MC) up about 1.0 percent and BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA) up 1.3 percent.

ECB FUNDING BOOST SOOTHES

Key euro zone bank-to-bank lending rates dropped as banks hoovered up almost half a trillion euros from the European Central Bank's first-ever injection of three-year loans.

The ECB's mid-week provision of 490 billion euros of the cheap longer-term cash to over 500 of the region's banks - the largest ever amount of liquidity pumped into the financial system - was expected to ease the impact of a wave of capital outflows by U.S. money market funds.

However, banks still appear to be reluctant to lend to each other, with use of the European Central Bank's overnight deposit facility reaching a new record high for the year on Thursday.

Outgoing ECB executive board member Lorenzo Bini Smaghi also suggested in comments in the Financial Times on Friday that the central bank should consider launching a U.S.-style asset purchase program if economic conditions change across the 17-country region.

Bini Smaghi told the Financial Times that, if required, "I would see no reason why such an instrument tailor-made for specific characteristics of the euro area should not be used."

His comments are the strongest indication yet that the central bank could expand its policy tools to prevent a possibly disastrous economic slump in continental Europe, although Bini Smaghi himself steps down at the end of December.

Meanwhile, fellow ECB Executive Board member Juergen Stark, whose is also leaving at the end of the month, was quoted as saying that Europe should not use the International Monetary Fund to get around the ban on central banks financing governments and that current plans might breach that principle.

Yields on Italian 10-year bonds were steady at 6.92 percent, back within a whisker of the 7 percent mark seen as unsustainably high over the long-term, with the Spanish equivalent 3 basis points lower at 5.39 percent.

Unsurprisingly, in 2011 Italian bonds (.QW4AP) have been one of the worst performers, posting losses of 5.65 percent overall with longer-dated paper losing almost 11 percent (.QW4U).

The rosier picture painted by the U.S. data also supported commodities, with copper - sensitive to expectations of industrial demand - rising nearly 1.0 percent to $7,614 a metric ton, on course for its first weekly gain in three weeks.

(AP) ? The rapper known as "Tyler, the Creator," has been arrested after authorities say he got rowdy after a show at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Arthur Famble Jr. says the rapper was arrested Thursday night after he destroyed the Sunset Strip nightclub's electronic soundboard.

The 20-year-old, whose real name is Tyler Gregory Okonma, was booked for investigation of felony vandalism and released on $20,000 bail.

The sergeant says that as the rapper was being led to a squad car, the crowd leaving the Roxy became angry and additional deputies were called in to disperse the crowd.

No one was hurt.

Telephone numbers for Okonma and his record company couldn't be found. Okonma says in a Twitter message that he wasn't arrested.

Lawyers for Sheen's ex-wife fear media frenzy (AP)

ASPEN, Colo. ? Attorneys for Charlie Sheen's ex-wife want to stop what they expect to be a media frenzy when she appears in court on drug and assault charges.

Attorneys asked a judge to deny a live Internet feed from the courtroom requested by TMZ Productions when Brooke Mueller appears on Jan. 23.

The 34-year-old Mueller faces a felony charge of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and a misdemeanor assault charge.

She was arrested Dec. 3 after a woman reported being assaulted at a nightclub.

The Aspen Times reported ( http://bit.ly/rWhvw7) that police found between four and five grams of cocaine when they contacted Mueller.

Sheen and Mueller divorced earlier this year after Sheen was arrested on suspicion of assaulting her in 2009. He completed his probation in November 2010.

San Diego take charge with big win over Baltimore (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Surging San Diego overcame Baltimore 34-14 Sunday to keep alive their postseason hopes while damaging the Ravens' playoff top seed ambitions.

San Diego scored 27 points without reply from the second quarter to the fourth, breaking open a 7-7 tie and dominating on both sides of the ball to steamroll their way to a third consecutive win.

Ryan Mathews scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, quaterback Philip Rivers threw for 270 passing yards and the San Diego defense tallied seven sacks and two interceptions in a dominant performance.

The victory moved San Diego (7-7) within a game of a playoff spot while the Ravens (10-4) had their four-game win streak snapped and fell a half-game behind Pittsburgh for first in the AFC North Division.

Baltimore welcomed back their defensive leader Ray Lewis, who had missed four games with a toe injury, but they failed to record a sack and they were quickly left in the dust.

The Chargers grabbed a 17-7 halftime lead before Rivers fired a 28-yard touchdown pass to Malcom Floyd in the third where Mathews added a three-yard score to push the advantage to 31-7.

Bargainers prepare 2-month payroll tax cut (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says congressional bargainers are preparing a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut and expiring jobless benefits as a fallback plan in case negotiations on a yearlong package don't succeed.

Lawmakers also worked on legislation to avoid a government shutdown at midnight Friday.

Those talks are still continuing and Reid said he still hoped they would succeed.

But with lawmakers hoping to leave town soon for the holidays, negotiators are working on shorter version they would revisit when Congress returns next year.

The bill would also avoid cuts in Medicare reimbursements to doctors that would last two months.

'The Real World: San Diego': Frank And Nate Fight Over Who Did More For A Charity Event (VIDEO)

It was a charity event gone all wrong on the finale of "The Real World: San Diego" (Wed., 10PM ET on MTV). Nate Stodghill was the organizer, but when things didn't go the way he wanted in advance -- he wanted his friends and housemates to sell tickets for him and they didn't sell enough to make him happy -- he got blitzed at the event itself.

Frank Sweeney laid into him then and there for his lack of professionalism, but that wasn't the last of it. Later, Nate was trying to relax in the jacuzzi, but there was still a lot of paperwork to take care of that he'd just left there. When Frank checked up on him to make sure Nate was on top of his part, Nate snapped at him and Frank lost it. After Nate's "performance" at the House of Blues, it's understandable.

While they were less violent than the previous season, this was still a very angry bunch of people who seemed more absorbed with their own problems than taking advantage of the opportunity the show gave them to open themselves up to new experiences and different kinds of people.
