FIRST GOLD

And the first gold medal has gone to China. Yi Siling has just triumphed in the women's 10-meter air rifle shooting.

___

SLOW PHELPS

Michael Phelps was surprisingly slow in the 400-meter individual medley prelims Saturday. He barely made the field and will swim in Lane 8 in the final.

No big deal, right? All lanes are the same.

Not exactly, according to a tweet from former Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders: "Lane 8 is worse than Lane 1 because Phelps breathes to the right on the way home. He won't see the rest of the field."

I CRIED LIKE A BABY

London Mayor Boris Johnson says he spent all night dreaming about the opening ceremony and thinks it was better than China's stunning show four years ago.

"Call me chauvinistic, call me jingoistic, but I think we knocked the spots off Beijing last night," Johnson said.

"From the beginning I was crying like a baby. I just thought it was brilliant."

He lauded the cultural complexity of Danny Boyle's production.

"We weren't just Beefeaters and Big Ben. It was the real story of this country," he said.

BILL GATES

The table tennis venue is abuzz with talk that Bill Gates will show up on Saturday ? and he'd see a familiar face in young American singles player Ariel Hsing.

The 16-year-old Californian is friends with Gates and fellow billionaire Warren Buffett, having played demonstration matches against the two earlier this year at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting.

She knows them well enough to call them "Uncle Bill" and "Uncle Warren." Is that cool or what?

NEWSPAPER REACTION

"BLAST-OFF!" thundered the Daily Mail; "Quirky and eccentric ... oh, how very British," judged the Daily Express; "TORCH OF GENIUS: QUEEN IN SKYFALL," was the Daily Mirror's take.

The Times led with a screen grab of James Bond, the queen and her corgis strutting down the red carpet of Buckingham Palace. Its headline: "Shaken and stirred."

The Sun, world famous for its in-your-face headlines, simply said "WOW" on the front page, with "FLAMING FANTASTIC" inside.

WHO'S IN CHARGE?

There's a battle for authority at points along Saturday morning's cycling road course. Even soldiers are being ordered around.

A military man in uniform demanded to be allowed to cross the road. A female police officer told him he could go through the gate, but the volunteer refused to open it. They all argued before he climbed atop the gate, saying simply "I'm crossing!"

He then fell hard on his knees on the pavement.

EARLY GOLD RUSH

The action's well underway, with Britain hoping for an early gold in the men's cycling road race. Elsewhere, swimming heats began, with Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Games four years ago, looking to qualify for potentially his first of the London Games.

HUGE AUDIENCE

Who says the collective television event is dead?

The BBC says 27 million people watched its coverage of the Olympic opening ceremony ? almost half the entire British population. That's even more than the 20 million who watched last year's royal wedding.

LINEUP SET

The Americans won't waste any time setting the tone for the women's gymnastics competition.

The reigning world champs and gold medal favorites are up first on vault in Sunday's qualifying session. The Americans do the toughest vaults in the world these days, and how they score will immediately give Russia, Romania and defending Olympic champion China an idea of whether they can catch up or not.

AUSSIE FAN POWER

Australia's archery coach James Park and a handful of athletes got an early start, heading out on the Tube to Green Park to find a place to cheer along their countrymen participating in the cycling road race.

"We're just spectators today," said Park, who will no doubt be backing sprinter Matt Goss.

Mark Cavendish has a chance to give host Great Britain its first medal. But Goss could challenge if it comes down to a sprint finish.

The race goes through London's streets, then into the Surrey countryside and ends outside Buckingham Palace mid-afternoon.

VIEWS FROM CHINA

Here's how some users of China's Sina Weibo microblog site felt about the start of the London Olympics:

? Onlooker: "I was most impressed by the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games which cost only $42 million ? less than half of what was spent at the Beijing Olympic Games."

? Timo in a dream: "Compared to the Beijing Olympic Games, I like the opening ceremony of the London Games which interprets the culture in a simple way and it's easy to understand."

? Fan Fan: "The cost of the London Olympic Games was decided by British taxpayers, but Chinese taxpayers did not even know the cost of the Beijing Games."

? Liurong: "Two different styles, what the Beijing games brought to people was unparalleled."

TWO-WAY TRAFFIC

At 7 a.m. fresh-eyed fans were streaming into Olympic Park ready for the action. On their commute, they couldn't help but notice the stragglers going home in the opposite direction. And some were still in party mode.

Near King's Cross station in central London, in an apparent attempt to inject some Winter Olympics ice dance action into the celebrations, one man picked up his girlfriend and straddled her on his shoulders before (successfully) spinning her around two or three times and gently placing her back down on the footpath, giving the early morning travellers their first smiles of the day.

COMING UP

Beach volleyball in the heart of central London will highlight Olympic competition Saturday, along with the first swimming medals. American rivals Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will face off in the 400-meter individual medley.

Two-time U.S. defending gold medalist pair Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor will be the feature match in the beach volleyball grandstand.

"It's amazing. Just this area in itself is so special," Walsh Jennings said. "You have the Horse Guards right there and the changing of the guard and you get to see this and all the historic culture. Really, really cool. I've been picturing this for so long, and to see it in person and have it come alive is awesome."

FLASHBACK ? BERLIN 1936: "Reichsfuehrer Adolf Hitler, attired in a brown uniform and smiling genially, formally launched the Eleventh Olympiad today amid ceremonies dazzlingly brilliant despite dripping skies marked by vividly contrasting demonstrations obviously fraught with political as well as sporting significance. ... The big United States delegation, surpassed in size only by the Germans who formed the procession as rear guard, was accorded a doubtful reception. Changing plans suddenly overnight to avoid the appearance of giving only a modified Nazi salute under the original intentions to extend arms with hats in hand, the Americans reverted to the former custom of doffing their hats and placing them over the heart while giving 'eyes right.'"

ROYAL BOND GIRL

Queen Elizabeth II made her acting debut as a Bond girl in just one take. The 86-year-old monarch appeared as herself in a short film for the London Olympics opening ceremony with James Bond actor Daniel Craig.

In the film, Craig arrived at her private study in Buckingham Palace, where she said "Good evening, Mr. Bond" before the pair boarded a helicopter.

BBC's director of Drama Production, Nicholas Brown, told The Telegraph newspaper that the queen gave a professional performance and "got it in one take."

___

FLASHBACK - LONDON 1908: "Lord Desbrough marched up with the members of the Executive Committee and said: 'Will Your Majesty graciously declare the Olympic games opened?' In reply the King said: 'I declare the Olympic games of London open.' At the completion of this ceremony cheering broke out from all parts of the stadium. After the demonstration had died down, the athletes gave three cheers for His Majesty, and then marched past the royal box. The men made a splendid appearance, though unfortunately the weather prevented all the competitors from coming out in athletic costumes. The Americans were among those who wore street clothing, but even thus attired the size of the men evoked much favorable comment."

Peter Scalettar And Cassie Lambert: Engaged 'Bachelor' Producers Share Their Behind-The-Scenes Love Story (PHOTOS)

Helping people fall in love is just part of a day?s work for Los Angeles-based couple Peter Scalettar, 34, and Cassie Lambert, 33, both producers for the reality TV franchises ?The Bachelor? and ?The Bachelorette.? But while they steer contestants toward finding ?the one? for a living, they never expected their jobs would lead them to a happy ending of their own. As they prepare for their August nuptials, the couple shared their story with HuffPost Weddings.

(Scroll down for photos)
Cassie: Peter and I met in 2008 on the very last day of shooting Matt Grant?s season of ?The Bachelor? in Barbados. I?d been working on the show for about a year, and Peter, who was assigned to be my camera operator for the day, had just returned to the crew from a two-year hiatus. We spent about six hours together shooting b-roll and interviews while Shayne Lamas, one of the two final cast members, waited for her proposal. Watching Pete interact with Shayne and the crew made me see how charismatic he is, and there was an immediate attraction. At one point, we cuddled up to take a picture together, and I thought, "I don't want to leave from under his arm."

Peter: I met Cassie just weeks after my return to the show. Seeing her talent on display was really sexy. She knows how to command a room: She?s able to laugh and be funny but still get the job done. It?s really mind-blowing.

Cassie: Less than a month later, we started we started prepping DeAnna Pappas? season and I was thrilled when Peter came back as a full-time producer. While we did go on a couple of dates, our relationship mostly progressed during work hours. I remember one evening when we had to go run errands. Pete let me drive his car -- which apparently doesn't happen often -- and we ended up ransacking some random Walmart around midnight. We had the best time running around the store.

When production started, we were on ?house producing duty? together, which included interviewing the cast about what they want -- in a partner, in a marriage, in life -- and pushing them to say those things to someone on their first, second, third dates. Because we would hang out for 15 hours straight talking to the cast and with each other, we?d start asking each other things like, ?I know how so-and-so feels about x topic, how to do you feel?? We found ourselves moving at a faster pace, just like the people on the show, discussing things we normally wouldn?t so soon. I really got to see who Pete is at work by watching him talk with cast members -- he?s going to be amazing when our daughter goes through her first heartbreak someday! About halfway through the season, I think we both realized this feels right.

Peter: I don?t know if there was a moment that I could pinpoint where I felt ?this is the real thing? because we didn?t go into our relationship with any major expectations. I think you get to a point in life where you just know. Nine months after we met, we moved in together.

Cassie: Working on the show really propelled our relationship forward. But we?ve also had our ups and downs because our personal and professional lives blend so much. We work 24/7 and we?re on location six, seven months out of the year, living in hotel rooms. It?s so much time spent together, but not quality time.

Peter: We?ve learned to drive to work separately.

Cassie: We also do this kind of cheesy ritual; when we were shooting in New Zealand about a year into our relationship, we discovered this M?ori tribe greeting where you put your foreheads and noses together and breathe in as a way of centering yourself. Whenever we?re stressed, Peter and I put our foreheads together to remind us of who we are and what?s important.

After four years on the show, we started getting pressure from our friends, the crew, Chris Harrison. Even cast members were like ?You?re telling me to get engaged, why haven?t you guys?? Finally we asked ourselves what we were waiting for. I think what really pushed us to get engaged was hearing cast members describe what they wanted in a partner and realizing that, everything they?re looking for, we have in each other.

After Christmas last year, we took the train into New York City, which is part of our holiday tradition: we see our families and then we spend a couple days on our own in the city. We were in Grand Central and there?s this thing we call ?the whisper wall? -- you can face one column and someone can stand at another and you can talk to each other really quietly but still hear each other across the room because of the architecture. We do it every time we?re in the station. When we got off the train, Pete suggested we go to the wall and I thought, ?Well, this would be a cool way to propose,? assuming the moment would be a lost opportunity for him to ask me.

Peter: Generally I?m not a nervous person but when we got off the train, I had tunnel vision. There could have been someone getting robbed on either side of me -- or murdered for that matter -- and I wouldn?t have seen it.

Cassie: He was standing at one end of the wall and I was standing at the other and he said all these sweet things about how much he loves me and how spending time with our families over the holidays made him want to spend the rest of his life with me. Then, he turned around, and I was looking at him and crying and we sort of met in the middle of the station.

Peter: The look on Cassie?s face was a combination of total elation and ?f**king finally.? I must have gotten to a point where I was just rambling about our love and forgot about the important question because I remember her saying, ?You need to actually ask me.?

Cassie: Then, he pulled out a ring made of Legos that we?d bought together in London after we?d been dating for about three months.

Peter: We found it in a small boutique on Portobello Road and things felt so right even then that I truly considered proposing to her with it on the spot. Instead, I carried that ring around with me every day for over three years.

Cassie: When he finally asked me, it was like the floodgates of love and emotion opened and I finally let myself fall for him completely. He was so sincere with his words, but also so nervous which made it feel even more spontaneous and real. I loved that he pulled out the Lego ring since we had such a history with it, and it was a good gut check for me when my reaction inside was, "OK -- I guess I'm rocking a Lego engagement ring," and didn't even mind. Needless to say, I was thrilled when he pulled out the real deal. I never thought I would be the girl with the gorgeous ring.

Peter: People at work were trying to get me to propose on set, but Cassie and I let so much of our life get preoccupied with the show and other people?s relationships that I wanted the proposal to be just our moment.

Cassie: For our wedding on August 4th, we wanted to acknowledge how we met, so there will be some "Bachelor" elements. Former cast members will be in attendance and Chris Harrison is going to marry us -- we asked him to get ordained. But we?re not having roses. We have enough roses in our world.

Gov. Cuomo Urges Storm Preparation For ... - Yeshiva World News

Governor Andrew Cuomo today urged New Yorkers to be prepared as severe thunderstorms storms pass through the state tomorrow. The storms are forecasted to bring heavy rain, high winds, and possible tornadoes, and may cause widespread power outages.

The National Weather Service today briefed state officials on the approaching storms and declared a Moderate Risk of Severe Weather for New York State. The prediction includes the possibility of high winds and possible tornadoes. At the Governor?s direction, the State Emergency Operations Center will be activated tomorrow at 1:00 PM. As weather conditions can change rapidly, the Governor today urged New Yorkers to pay close attention to local radio and television reports to stay up to date with the storms? progress.

?I urge all New Yorkers to take caution and pay attention to local radio and television reports for the latest information on the progress of these summer storms,? Governor Cuomo said. ?Proper precautions undertaken now can help ensure that the strong winds and heavy rain cause as little damage as possible and that families and individuals are kept safe from harm.?

New York State Office of Emergency Management Director Steven Kuhr said, ?Families and individuals should have an emergency kit and an emergency plan in place. Your emergency kit should include items such as non-perishable food, water, a portable radio, flashlights and extra batteries. Pay attention to Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages that carry local information and emergency orders, such as evacuation or travel restrictions. If emergency orders are issued, do not hesitate ? take immediate action.?

The Governor offered the following tips as the storm approaches:

Before the storm hits:

  • Tie down or bring inside lawn furniture, trash cans, tools and hanging plants that could be projectiles during the storm.
  • If you have a basement, check sump pumps to ensure they are operating and be prepared to use a backup system.
  • Have a standby generator or alternative source of power available.
  • Check on neighbors, especially the elderly and disabled.

As the storm approaches:

  • Stay inside, away from windows and glass doors.
  • Charge your cellphones and important electronic devices
  • Stay off roads. If you are traveling, find safe shelter immediately.

If you must travel:

  • Do not attempt to drive over flooded roads ? turn around and go another way. Water moving at two miles per hour can sweep cars off a road or bridge.
  • Watch for areas where rivers or streams may suddenly rise and flood, such as highway dips, bridges, and low areas.
  • If you are in your car and water begins to rise rapidly around you, abandon the vehicle immediately.

If you are at home or at work:

  • Stay at home unless you have been ordered to leave.
  • Turn refrigerator to maximum cold and open only when necessary.
  • Turn off utilities if told to do so by authorities.
  • Turn off propane tanks.
  • Unplug major appliances.
  • Fill large containers with water.

If winds become strong:

  • Stay away from windows and doors even if they are covered.
  • Close all interior doors.
  • Secure and brace external doors.
  • If you are in a two or multiple-story house, go to an interior lower-floor room.
  • Remain indoors during a severe thunder storm. If warned of a tornado, go to a basement or other low area in your home or business or in a room with no windows.

If you lose electrical service:

  • Call your utility first to determine area repair schedules. Turn off or unplug lights and appliances to prevent a circuit overload when service is restored. Leave one light on to indicate power has been restored.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to help reduce food spoilage.
  • If you have space in your refrigerator or freezer, fill plastic containers with water, leaving an inch of space inside each one. This will help keep food cold.

If you need to use a generator:

  • Before installing a generator, be sure to properly disconnect from your utility electrical service. If possible, have your generator installed by a qualified electrician.
  • Run generators outside, downwind of structures. Never run a generator indoors. Deadly carbon monoxide gas from the generator?s exhaust can spread throughout enclosed spaces.
  • Fuel spilled on a hot generator can cause an explosion. If your generator has a detachable fuel tank remove it before refilling. If this is not possible, shut off the generator and let it cool before refilling.
  • Do not exceed the rated capacity of your generator. Most small, home-use portable generators produce 350 to 12,000 watts of power. Overloading your generator can damage it and appliances connected to it, and may cause a fire. Follow the manufacturer?s instructions.
  • Keep children away from generators at all times.

Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Do not operate generators indoors; the motor emits deadly carbon monoxide gas.
  • Do not use charcoal to cook indoors. It, too, can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide gas.
  • Do not use your gas oven to heat your home ? prolonged use of an open oven in a closed house can create carbon monoxide gas.
  • Install a carbon monoxide alarm.

(AP) ? "Dancing with the Stars" is repeating some steps for its fall season.

An "All-Star" edition of the ABC competition show will bring back 12 former rivals including Pamela Anderson, Kirstie Alley and Bristol Palin.

Former 'NSync member Joey Fatone and gymnast Shawn Johnson will also be returning, ABC announced Friday.

Other contestants include:

? "General Hospital" star Kelly Monaco.

? Former 98 Degrees boy-band member Drew Lachey.

? Super Bowl champ Emmitt Smith.

? Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves.

? Olympic medalist speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno.

? "The Bachelor" star Melissa Rycroft.

? Actor Gilles Marini.

In a break from the past, viewers can vote online for the 13th contestant from three former contestants including actors Kyle Massey and Sabrina Bryan and celebrity stylist Carson Kressley. Deadline for filling this 13th slot is Aug. 24, with the winning candidate announced on "Good Morning America" three days later.

"This is about giving the viewers a treat, and breaking the rhythm of the show," said executive producer Conrad Green during a panel at the Television Critics Association conference.

Host Tom Bergeron said he was looking forward to being reunited with past contestants who became friends.

"There's going to be an element of camaraderie that I think will be evident right out of the gate," he said, which will allow him to relate to them not unlike the way he connects with the show's judges ? "with banter and occasional snarkiness," he laughed.

Among the celebrities gathered for the panel, Bristol Palin in particular was in the crosshairs of reporrters, including one who asked her how she would feel being partnered with a gay dancer. (Just fine, thanks.)

Asked why she was subjecting herself, once again, to the scrutiny of the media as a "Dancing" contestants, Palin replied, "I just think that God provides opportunities like this, and you can either go out and do them or not do them, and I figure the press will be talking about me, no matter what."

But as the daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and, like both her parents, a reality star, has she made herself "more vulnerable by making reality television the Palin family business?" another reporter asked.

"I definitely don't think it's our business," said Palin. "You guys will be talking about us either way, and I might as well be doing something enjoyable and fun and with a good group of people."

"You haven't really gone full Kardashian," Bergeron cracked.

"Dancing" returns for its 15th season on ABC on Sept. 24.

BAT sees good earnings growth in 2012

LONDON (Reuters) - British American Tobacco expects good earnings growth this year despite the strong pound holding back its performance at the half-year after the world's No.2 cigarette maker gained from price rises and strong emerging markets.

The London-based group, which makes Kent, Dunhill, Lucky Strike and Pall Mall cigarettes, said on Wednesday its half-year volumes were flat at 344 billion cigarettes while price rises pushed up its underlying sales by 4 percent.

Chairman Richard Burrows said despite global economic uncertainty and the adverse impact of exchange rates the group had performed well and he was upbeat for the full year.

"The underlying business continues to perform well and we are confident of another year of good earnings growth," he said.

BAT, which made 705 billion cigarette last year, has seen smoking levels decline in Western Europe and North America, but has offset this by pushing up prices and seeing growth in emerging markets like Brazil, Mexico, Romania and Russia.

The company posted a 7 percent rise in half-year adjusted diluted earnings per share to 102.4 pence, in line with a consensus forecast of 102.5 pence according to a company-compiled survey of analysts.

The half-year dividend, set at one third of 2011's full year level, rose 11 percent to 42.2 pence a share.

Rival Imperial Tobacco reported on Tuesday that price rises offset volume falls as it lifted its revenues by three percent in the nine-month to end-June after it suffered in recession-hit Spain as well as Ukraine and Poland.

(AP Photo/Gerald Herbert, File)

(AP) ? Training camp is under way around the NFL and every team believes it has a chance to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The New York Giants proved for the second time in five years you don't have to dominate in the regular season to win the Super Bowl. Just get into the postseason and play your best football in January. The Green Bay Packers learned that lesson the hard way after going 15-1 and getting knocked out in the divisional round.

The next six weeks will provide a reality check for several teams. They'll answer position battles, roster questions and learn if they can be legitimate contenders.

There was plenty of change during the offseason, though things were back to normal and teams held their minicamps, Organized Team Activities and workout programs, unlike last year when labor problems ruled the day. Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow switched uniforms. Chad Ochocinco switched his name back to Johnson. Several teams switched coaches.

Let's examine six of the top questions going into training camp:

___

HOW DO THE BOUNTY SUSPENSIONS AFFECT THE SAINTS?

Coach Sean Payton was banished for the season along with linebacker Jonathan Vilma, leaving the New Orleans Saints short-handed in the wake of the bounty scandal. The Saints are coming off a 13-3 season and have a happy Drew Brees back in the fold after he signed a five-year, $100 million deal that gives him the highest average annual pay in league history. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt will run the team until he begins serving a six-game suspension at the start of the regular season. There will be an adjustment period in the preseason, but the Saints should be in good shape with Brees running the offense and new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo calling the signals on defense.

___

DOES PEYTON MANNING PICK UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF IN INDIANAPOLIS?

The Denver Broncos are counting heavily on Manning to play like the 10-time Pro Bowl QB he was during his 13 seasons with the Colts after giving him a $96 million contract. But the four-time NFL MVP missed all of last season following four neck operations. Manning not only was one of the greatest QBs of all time before his injury, he also was the second-most durable. Manning started 227 consecutive games, including the postseason, from 1998-2010. Health aside, Manning's biggest adjustment will be getting his timing down with his new receivers and building a rapport with the rest of the offense.

___

WILL THE NEW YORK GIANTS FINALLY AVOID A SUPER BOWL HANGOVER?

If the Giants hope to repeat, they'll have to do something they've never done the season after winning the Super Bowl. That is, win a playoff game. The Giants failed to reach the playoffs the year after winning their first two Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990. After winning it in 2007, they followed that up with a 12-4 season but lost to the Eagles in the divisional round. The Giants have holes on offense. They lost their starting right tackle and tight end, need a backup running back and depth at wide receiver. But they do have Eli Manning, and he's coming off his best statistical season. They also have a strong defense that flourished in the playoffs after allowing 400 points in the regular season.

___

CAN THE DREAM TEAM BECOME A DYNASTY?

Last year, Vince Young anointed the Philadelphia Eagles a "Dream Team." They failed miserably to live up to the hype, going 8-8 and missing the playoffs. Now Michael Vick raised eyebrows with an outrageous comment, saying the Eagles can develop into a "dynasty." Those are bold words from a QB who has two career playoff wins. Moreover, the Eagles haven't won a playoff game since 2008 and the franchise hasn't won a championship since 1960. The term "dynasty" is reserved for teams that win multiple Super Bowls with the same core of players in a short period. The Eagles obviously have a long way to go before they can ever be mentioned in the same class with Terry Bradshaw's Steelers, Joe Montana's 49ers or Tom Brady's Patriots.

___

WHAT WILL TIM TEBOW'S IMPACT BE ON THE JETS?

From the second the New York Jets acquired Tebow from Denver, people have wondered if he can coexist with Mark Sanchez. There's sure to be a QB controversy on Broadway at some point this season. The Jets' plan for Tebow should become more clear during training camp and the preseason. There's speculation he'll replace Sanchez in the red zone or just enter the game in a variation of the wildcat formation. Perhaps they'll use a bulked-up Tebow on special teams as the punt protector. He may also get a few carries out of the backfield. Whatever the plan, and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano may hold off on showing most of it until the games actually count, the spotlight will be on Tebow this summer.

___

WHO WILL SIGN DONOVAN McNABB OR T.O.?

It seems like forever ago that McNabb and Terrell Owens were feuding less than a year after leading the Eagles to a NFC title. The former friends-turned-enemies have more in common these days. They're two of the most accomplished players on the unemployment line. McNabb's career has fizzled since the six-time Pro Bowl QB was traded from Philadelphia to Washington in 2010. He was cut by the Redskins and Vikings the last two years and finds himself looking for a job as a backup. If a starter goes down in camp, McNabb may get a call. Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Owens is hoping to prove he's still a capable receiver after missing all of last season recovering from knee surgery. Owens was released by the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League in May.

Lack Of Security Killing Off Business Enterprise In Jamaica ...

THE Jamaican economy has been one of the worst performing economies in the world over the last 30 years judged by its dismal rate of economic growth. In addition, we are now one of the most indebted countries in the world with a debt/GDP ratio of over 140 per cent.

Diagnoses have differed widely and include a gamut of explanations, empirical and psychological. They include: structural features, poor management by successive governments, corruption, institutional weaknesses, ill-conceived macroeconomic policies, excessive taxation, inefficient private sector, exploitation by foreign multinational corporations, the dismantling of preferential trade arrangements, deleterious effect of the global economic crisis, and political rhetoric. We may have missed a few more, but the essential point is that none of these fully explain the problem.

In our view, the fundamental cause of Jamaica?s economic problems is the fact that we have not had and still do not have in place the necessary foundation for a private sector-led, market-driven economy. These foundational prerequisites include physical security, security of productive property and security of earnings.

The stark reality of Jamaica is that citizens, in general ? but business persons, in particular ? are not physically safe. The insecurity involving serious injury and loss of life is increased significantly once a person operates a business of any size in any part of the country. Business persons are not safe at home or at their business place or in moving from one place to another. Business people are prime targets for criminals and the fear of loss of life or endangering family and loved ones discourages countless people from investing, operating a business and from returning home to Jamaica to do business.

The Jamaican economy is being murdered one business person at a time every day.

Even if someone is prepared to risk his or her life to go into business, very often they cannot because they are unable to get the use of their assets, in particular buildings and lands that have been captured. In many cases, there is no security of productive property which seriously discourages investment and prevents rightful owners from putting their assets into production.

The loss of construction and other investment to squatting and other forms of illegal possession is incalculable. The amount of idle land or under-utilised land in the agriculture sector is enormous. It is almost impossible, even with a court order, to regain possession of captured land for fear of violence and the interference of politicians.

If someone risks injury and death and has use of the property, there is no guarantee that they will reap the rewards of their endeavours. Praedial larceny is responsible in large part for sub-optimal production and insufficient private investment in agriculture. If a return is realised the business person may be deprived by extortion of protection money or simply robbed. No one farm or business is too small to be immune from robbery.

The fact that the mango tree is on your land does not mean that you will get any of the fruit. It is first come first served. Ownership and cultivation are irrelevant.

No economy can grow and prosper if business people are not physically secure, if their productive property is not secure, and if their earnings are not secure.

Fujifilm unwraps FinePix F800EXR camera with wireless sharing to Android, iOS

If your company doesn't have a camera with WiFi sharing somewhere in your lineup, many will say you're not even in the photography game. Fujifilm is definitely playing: welcome the FinePix F800EXR, its first camera with wireless sharing as part and parcel of the experience. Its centerpiece is a free Photo Receiver app for Android and iOS devices that will catch as many 30 images at a time from an ad hoc WiFi camera link. The matching (if unceremoniously named) Camera Application can return the gesture by geotagging shots as well as finding existing photos on the map. Fujifilm will even pre-Instagram the photos through six new on-camera filters for those who can't stand posting images online without at least some Lomo or tilt-shift effects thrown in.

As for the actual camera part of the camera, Fujifilm is keeping afloat in the competitive waters with a 16-megapixel, CMOS-based EXR sensor that can widen the dynamic range or lower the noise if sheer resolution isn't all that vital. An equally noteworthy 20x (25-500mm equivalent) lens out in front will zoom in a lot closer than any phone camera -- well, most of them. We're otherwise looking at the technology we'd expect in a point-and-shoot of this class, such as full-resolution burst shooting at up to eight frames per second, 1080p video and a RAW mode for image quality sticklers. Stores should have the F800EXR in August for about $350, or about as much as the Galaxy Nexus that just might serve as its companion.

Crawfish Salad Recipe - Hunter Angler Gardener Cook

crawfish salad recipe

If you are an American, you probably think that the title of this post is a bit odd. Scandinavian crawfish? But make no mistake: If there is a crawdad-eating culture that can match the Cajuns, it?s the Scandos. And high summer is the season for them in Sweden and Finland.

Crayfish eating is done with much ceremony in a Swedish kraftskiva, and, much like a New England lobster boil or a Cajun crawdad boil, there are certain things that must be included: The crayfish are always boiled in salty water with lots of dill; usually the flowering heads of dill, which have a stronger flavor. Anise can go into the boil, too, as can a few other spices. Sometimes beer makes its way into the boil.

Oh, and the Scandinavians tend to eat all of the crayfish, including the claw meat. They even have a special crayfish knife for the purpose. Very few Americans I know bother with the claw meat, but as you can see, it can be well worth the effort with a big crawdad:

crayfish claw meat

Beer, or more likely akavit ??a ferocious, caraway-flavored liqueur I mostly associate with nearby Denmark ? is the drink of choice here. Lots of it. Apparently a Scandinavian crayfish party is really more of an elaborate drinking game than a meal. Everyone wears party hats and is supposed to take a shot of akavit or schnapps between each crayfish. And a normal serving of crayfish is about a dozen. Uff-da.

A dozen? Crap, I can eat a dozen crawdads in maybe 5 minutes. Shelled, I could eat that in a mouthful. OK, a big mouthful, but you get the point. It?s the dozen shots that would do me in. I can?t drink like I used to, which is probably for the best.

So where does this crayfish salad come in? Well, apparently even the Scandos can?t drink excessively every day. But they do love their crawfish, and their season is short, from late July to early September. Light, lovely crawfish salads show up all over Scandinavia, and this is my version.

I know what a few remaining doubters out there might be thinking: Blech, Scandinavian food? First off, it sure as hell ain?t German food. (And for the record, German food is not as bad as its reputation.) And second, I might remind any doubters that for several years running the best restaurant on the planet has been NOMA, in Denmark. Scando food ? real Scandinavian food ? is light, carefully constructed and studded with unexpected flavors, some imported since the Viking days.

Give this salad a go on your next hot summer night. And if you can?t find crawfish, those pretty little cocktail shrimp (which are sustainably caught in North American waters, by the way) are an excellent substitute, as is king crab.

Scandinavian?Crayfish Salad

Crayfish salads are pretty common in Scandinavia, although this recipe is my own. If you want to make this salad but can?t get crayfish, use those little cocktail shrimp from Maine or the North Pacific. Serve this salad with pumpernickel, cheese and either a crisp white wine or a lager beer.

Serves 4-6 as a light supper or appetizer.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: n/a

  • 1 pound crayfish shells and/or claw meat
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion
  • 1 cup seeded, chopped cucumbers (peel the skin if it?s bitter)
  • 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
  • 2 teaspoons mustard
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

__________

  1. Put the crayfish tails, red onion and cucumber in a bowl. Mix the horseradish, mustard and mayo together, then mix into with the crayfish. Stir in the dill and add salt and black pepper to taste.

NFL Hall of Famer & former PSU football player, Franco Harris continues to suppo...

It is ashame for them to punish the kids that worked so hard to achieve wins for their school and now to think that they might take away the wins or take football away from them. They did not do anything wrong but gave many months of hard ...work to get wins. Then, it is crazy to think that they are going after a person that gave his entire life up to his death for the school and now drag his family through all of this. You seek to give punishment to the wrong people look into the true person that is already in jail and was responsible for changing lives and should be punished. Leave the kids alone why don't they think this out and do the right thing. I also believe taking the statue down was wrong - his life was devoted to the school and kids and I also heard that he did report what he felt was done and I believe he was there to protect and help the many people at the school. Let the dead rest and quit hurting his family that did nothing.See More

Keep Your Relationship Emotionally Fit! 8 Simple Tips - Psych Central

Keep Your Relationship Emotionally Fit! 8 Simple TipsSelf-care is key for our spiritual, emotional and physical health. You probably partake in a variety of nourishing habits every day ? from the bare essentials of taking a shower and brushing your teeth to getting enough sleep, exercising and meditating.

The same is true for relationships: They require daily care to stay healthy.

It?s important for couples to nourish their relationships on a regular basis. But this doesn?t mean sweeping, dramatic acts. The seemingly small stuff counts, and it goes a very long way.

In his book Emotional Fitness for Couples, psychotherapist Barton Goldsmith, Ph.D, shares simple ways couples can stay in shape and become closer and stronger every day.

Here are eight ideas from his helpful book.

1. Create a special, secret way to say ?I love you.?

According to Goldsmith, saying ?I love you? creates a safe and secure space. Think about how you can make this a unique ritual. In the book he features an example of a happily married couple who texts each other ?111? and ?111-2? to signify ?I love you.?

2. Engage in random acts of love.

Goldsmith suggests each partner make a list of loving acts you?d like the other to perform, such as a backrub or breakfast in bed. Exchange your lists, and aim to do something from your partner?s list once a week.

3. Go to bed together.

?Sleeping together is one of the most important parts of a relationship,? Goldsmith writes. Even if you have different schedules, this can be done. Goldsmith gives an example of a couple who always go to bed together, even though she goes to bed at 8:30 p.m. and he gets his best ideas at night. They lay together until she falls asleep. Then he reads, writes or gets up and watches TV. Goldsmith suggests creating a bedtime routine, which might include anything from reading from a fave book together to snuggling while watching TV.

4. Do romantic deeds.

?If you want to express your romantic feelings to someone you love, do something, anything, rather than nothing,? Goldsmith writes. Romance doesn?t need to be a grand getaway. Again, small totally counts. For instance, he explains that one flower tends to have the same effect as a bouquet. He suggests talking to each other about what you find romantic and creating a romance ?wish list,? which you can exchange.

5. Make yourself happy.

Partners are not responsible for each other?s happiness. As Goldsmith says, ?Happiness is an inside job.? Thinking otherwise can chip away at your relationship. One way to be happier is to keep a gratitude journal. Goldsmith suggests jotting down five things you?re grateful for every night and reading it in the morning. If you?re not sure what makes you happy, ask your partner. They usually notice what contributes to your joy.

6. Take time for yourself.

A healthy relationship isn?t all-consuming, either. It shouldn?t make up your entire life, Goldsmith says. He suggests spending time alone to rediscover yourself ? taking solo trips, for instance ? and recording your own goals, desires and plans.

7. Chat about change.

Change is inevitable. Our lives change. We change. Our relationships change. Goldsmith suggests talking with your partner about how you?d like to deal with change so you?re better prepared. For instance, you might discuss what to do if one of you loses your job, he says.

8. Spend a few minutes connecting.

Goldsmith suggests the following exercise to cultivate a deeper connection, which takes just a few minutes: Hold each other?s hands, look into each other?s eyes and remember what you love about each other.? He also suggests doing this before having important conversations.
