~ Sailaja

Mysore, the city of palaces, is a popular tourist destination in the state of Karnataka, in Southern India. Historically, Mysore kingdom was ruled by the Wodeyar dynasty, though it was a part of the Vijayanagar empire for a while and under the rule of Hyder Ali/Tipu Sultan later. The Wodeyars were great patrons of art and culture, which is amply reflected in the rich legacy left by them. Dasara festival brings that out in all its glory, with renowned artists and groups performing classical music, dance, drama, folk arts in concerts and shows all around the city. The beautiful palaces, the art galleries, the temples, the old buildings, the greenery, the lakes and the parks, all showcase the beauty and splendor of a city that once was and still is, in many ways. Mysore is famous for its silks, sandalwood, handicrafts, agarbathies and of course, the sweet Mysore Pak.

Bisi Bele Bath, a wholesome dish made with rice, lentils and vegetables

Just as there is no one ?Indian cuisine?, there isn?t one ?Mysore cuisine? as such either. The city has a majority Hindu population with fairly large Muslim, Christian and Jain communities as well, all with distinct dishes and methods/philosophies in cooking. And within the Hindu religion are the various sects, each having their own unique dishes. Ragi mudde (finger millet dumplings) with bassaaru (rasam made with the broth of pulses and/or greens), mutton and koli (chicken) saarus is a staple in the Gowda community. They are also known for their mutton chops, kheema and pulao. Kodavas (who are originally from the neighbouring district of Coorg) have their own fabulous fare ? pandi (pork), chicken and other meat curries, steamed dishes (called noolputtu, kadambuttu etc), ottis (rice breads) apart from a whole range of vegetarian side dishes. What I?m writing about today mainly reflects the typical foods in my community, many of which are typical to other communities in the Mysore-Bangalore region as well.

Rice is a must-have in our pantries. It is almost akin to cutting off a limb if we ever run out of rice! You may find rice dishes in all courses (from soup (ganji) through dessert (payasa)) and in all meals throughout the day. For breakfast in the form of rottis, idli and dosas, avalakki (poha), otthu shavige (home made thin rice noodles) etc. Cooked rice with various accompaniments for lunch/dinner; as spiced rice bhath with vegetables and masalas; cooked with dals in huggi and bisi bele bhath; and in sweets like payasa. We use it in all forms ? flour, flat or beaten rice, whole, creamed, broken, puffed ? you name it, we do something with it! It is the main source of carbohydrates in our diet.

A typical Mysore breakfast includes South Indian staples like dosas, idli, uppittu (upma) and avalakki (poha). Apart from these, akki rotti, raagi rotti, pooris with saagu or aloo bhaji and rava idlies are also commom. Rava (semolina) uppittu is the most popular amongst upma varieties. We also make upma with akkitari (broken rice) and with a spice powder called vangibhath pudi in rava bhath. Rava dosa, raagi dosa are some of the variations of dosa, apart from the more famous Mysore Masala Dosa.

Everyday meals are pretty simple, though always wholesome. Rice, as I mentioned earlier, is a staple in every house. Wheat based phulkas, rotis etc aren?t traditionally a part of our cuisine but they do appear often, if not daily, in meals these days. Rice is served with some form of dal/lentils. From simple seasoned dals through spicy, vegetable heavy huli, kootu etc (see glossary below) ? form the protein element in a meal. There are one or two vegetable sides (varieties explained in glossary below) and pickles (lime, ginger mango, mango etc). Every meal ends with rice mixed with yogurt/curds and/or a glass of spiced buttermilk (majjige).

A typical ?Habbada Oota? or festival lunch ? Payasa (kheer), palya (dry bhaji), kosambari, holige or obbattu, aloo bonda and bisi bele bath. Saaru (rasam), huli (sambar) and mosaru (yogurt) are the remaining dishes, not seen in this picture.

For special occasions such as weddings, festivals etc, the food gets as much attention as the festivities. Food is served on a plantain leaf, with designated spots for each dish. Dishes are served in a particular order too. Payasa, a sweet, is served on the bottom right first, followed by salt, pickle, two types of kosambaris (raw salads), two palyas (dry vegetable curry), gojju (tangy-spicy curry) and/or majjige huli (vegetables in yogurt gravy), then a spiced rice followed by white rice, thovve (lightly seasoned dal) and ghee. You start eating only after all these are served. Then comes saaru (rasam), huli (sambar), fried fritters and sweets. The final course is always curd rice and majjige (spiced buttermilk).

Here is a glossary of our typical dish names with links to some typical recipes for those.
Bele (Lentils)
Simple Dals: Thovve, Katt Saaru
Saaru: thin rasams with or without dals (Tamarind saaru, Bele (dal) saaru (with or without vegetables), avarekalu saaru)
Bassaaru: rasam made with the broth of cooked dal/lentil or greens (Moong Saaru, Hurali Saaru)
Huli: Thicker dals with vegetables in a special blend of spices (eggplant-onion huli, Cabbage huli, avarekalu huli, huli thovve)
Majjige Huli: vegetables in spiced yogurt sauce
Kootu: Dal mixed with vegetables in a coconut masala (mixed veg kootu, dill kootu, cabbage kootu)
Sides
Palya: saut?d or boiled vegetables in a dry masala or tadka (cucumber, green beans-carrot, cabbage, beetroot)
Gojju: a spicy-tangy-mildly sweet curry made with vegetables or fruits (okra, capsicum and onion, raw cucumber, mango, apple)
Rasavangi: similar to gojju but with a slightly different masala and copra (green beans, beetroot)
Kosambari: salads with uncooked lentils and/or vegetables (moong-carrot, carrot-alfalfa)
Karida thindi (deep fried snacks) : ambode, maddur vade (a delicious snack from Maddur, a nearby town), nippattu (flat fritters made with rice flour), kodubale (ring shaped snack made with rice flour)
Fryums (sun dried ready-to-fry fritters): Happala (papad), sandige, baaLaka (spiced chillies)
Sihi (sweets/desserts): pheni, chiroti (flaky pastries), payasa, halubai, obbattu, Mysore pak, sajjappa, eriyappa (flattened sweet dumplings), hayagreeva (made with chana dal)
Pudis (Spice Powders): huli pudi, saaru pudi, palya/vangibhath pudi

Avarekayi/field beans (mochakai in Tamil and a close relative to papdi lilva) is another obsession with us. Come avarekayi season, you will find a kind of frenzy in Mysore (and Bangalore and surrounding areas) that only this bean can bring. It is on the menu every day, if not every meal! From breakfast through dinner, it will make appearance in some form or the other, especially at the beginning of the season. Avarekayi is spread out in heaps at the markets, on carts and baskets, discussions about the prices and the crop that year, dishes made, recipes exchanged ? it is a season of joy! Bangalore actually hosts an Avarekayi Mela that lasts over a week in December, where you will find stalls upon stalls of vendors selling field beans fresh from their farms and food stalls selling only dishes made with avarekayi ? from dosas, idlies and vadas to sweets like holige(obbattu)and chikkis! Akki rotti, usili (salad), saaru (rasam), huli and upma are some of the other delicious dishes made with this.

Kadalebele Kosambari (Chana Dal Salad) Recipe
Kosambari is a delicious low-fat and nutritious raw salad traditionally made with split lentils (chana dal or moong dal) and vegetables (cucumber and/or carrot). Two types of kosambari are made on festival days and special occasions. It is one of the side dishes in a meal but I?ve had many a kosambari as a meal by itself!

Kosambari

Ingredients:
1 cup chana dal
1 medium cucumber, diced small
1 heaped tbsp fresh grated coconut
1-2 green chillies, chopped fine
chopped cilantro for garnish
1 tsp lemon juice
salt to taste

Tadka:
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
a pinch of heeng/asafetida
1 tsp cooking oil

Method:
Soak chana dal for 2 hours. Wash a couple times, drain and keep aside.
Chop cucumber. Set aside for 10 minutes, then squeeze out as much water as possible.
Mix in the softened chana dal, cucumber, green chilies, coconut and cilantro.
Just before serving, add salt and lemon juice.

Kalasida Anna or mixed rice (sometimes just called bhath) is very common in the Mysore region. Rice is mixed with spices and/or vegetables and eaten with a raita (a yogurt salad) on the side or sometimes with just some ghee on top. Sometimes rice is mixed with tadka and coconut or made a bit more elaborate with ground masalas and spiced vegetables. Chitraanna is rice mixed in a simple tadka, with a sour agent like lemon or citron (heralekai in Kannada). Vangibhath is another popular kalasida anna, where rice is mixed in with various vegetables and a fragrant spice powder called vangibhath pudi (MTR brand makes a very good one).

A rice based recipe that I am sharing with you today is called kayi-sasive anna, literally meaning coconut-mustard rice. The ground chutney can actually be stored away in the refrigerator for a few days, to be used later either as a chutney or as a masala in a rice.

Sasive Anna

I?d like to thank Sailaja for inviting me to write about foods from the Mysore region. Given the culinary diversity even within states and regions, her series ?Indian Food Trail? has been an excellent initiative to showcase the rich variety of foods that fall under the all-encompassing term ?Indian cuisine?. The Indian Food Trail series has been very informative and interesting and I?m delighted and honored to have been a part of it.

  • Asafoetida - a few pinches (heeng)
  • Dried red chilies - 3
  • Green chilies - 1 -2
  • Tamarind paste - 1/2 tsp (or about gooseberry sized)
  • Coconut - 1/2 cup shredded or copra
  • For the tadka/oil seasoning:
  • Cooking oil - 2-3 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal - 1 tsp
  • Chana dal - 1 tsp
  • Dried red chilies - 1 -2

A New Blood Test for Depression Proves It's Not All In Your Head

Mental Health Innovation: MDDScore is the first-ever blood test that screens biological indicators of depression, like inflammation and neurochemicals (the company that makes it won't reveal which ones it tests for, exactly). The test, which will soon be out in the U.S. and requires a doctor's order, is the first ?objective diagnostic measure? for the disorder? which means you can get a diagnosis based on biological markers of the disease. You get a numerical score that suggests how likely it is that you have depression. Studies show that MDD Score is about as accurate at making a diagnosis as the most rigorous questionnaires.

Who: Lonna J. Williams

What She Does: CEO of Ridge Diagnostics, the company introducing MDDScore

U.S Mental Illness Rates are Persistently High

Why It's Innovative:?"Every psychiatrist and primary care physician we talk to says?they need to be able to diagnosis early and get the patients on the right treatment,? says Williams. ?And they need to know as quickly as possible if the treatment is working.??The test has the potential to improve treatment, as well, because patients may be more accepting of a blood-test result, she says. "It's of significant impact to the patient. Suddenly the patient sees a blood test that says ?this is your disorder.? It's like any other disorder. It's not in your head. It's meaningful. It's not your fault. The stigma abates and they become more involved in their own care."

The idea for the MDDScore blood test first came up when a scientist who was studying biological signs of depression saw how those ?biomarkers? changed when patients responded to therapy. The scientist's son had a mental health disorder that had been misdiagnosed and, in turn, he wasn?t being treated appropriately. That was further motivation to try to create a biologically-based diagnostic test for major depression, Williams says.

Sneak Peek: Psychiatry's 'Bible' is Updated After Nearly 20 Years

The Problem That Keeps Her Up at Night:?"Are physicians going to accept this and make it available to their patients? I believe strongly that patients will embrace it. But any time something new is introduced to physicians, they can be a little hesitant until some time goes by. I look forward to physicians embracing this."

Where Mental Health Needs More Innovation: ?We need stronger and larger consumer awareness organizations, such as those that address cancer or HIV or other highly prevalent diseases," says Williams. ?There hasn't been much of that with mental health. There is no organized patient advocacy. There are bits and pieces here and there, but they are disparate and not organized. I think this industry needs to start creating that to help with innovation and education and abatement of the stigma."

Feeling Blue? Let Dr. Feel Good Make a House Call

How You Can Take Action: "Seek out innovative technologies. There are physicians who are using treatments other than drugs. There are particular blood tests or genetic tests that can tell you if you are a metabolizer of one kind of drug or another. There is more personalization of medicine." Moreover, she adds, don't be embarrassed by having a mental health disorder. "There shouldn't be a stigma. It's not your fault. The more these technologies become broadly used, the more the stigma will abate."

The MDDScore test is expected to cost $745 if paid for out-of-pocket.

Would you trust a blood test to diagnose depression? If you deal with depression, what innovations would you like to see in diagnosis or treatment?

Duncan gets 14th NBA All-Star nod; 2 Bulls chosen

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tim Duncan was selected to his 14th All-Star game, Spurs teammate Tony Parker is joining him, and the Chicago Bulls also had two reserves chosen Thursday for next month's game in Houston.

Joakim Noah and Luol Deng were picked from the Bulls, who have stayed in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race despite the season-long absence of point guard Derrick Rose. Noah is one of five first-time All-Stars for the East, along with New York's Tyson Chandler, Indiana's Paul George, Cleveland's Kyrie Irving, and Philadelphia's Jrue Holiday.

Miami's Chris Bosh, picked for his eighth All-Star team, rounded out the East squad.

West forwards David Lee (Golden State), LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland) and Zach Randolph (Memphis) all were picked for the second time. Houston's James Harden was chosen for the first time and joins former Oklahoma City teammate Russell Westbrook, headed to his third straight All-Star game.

Duncan wasn't chosen last year for the first time in his career but has bounced back with a terrific season at age 36, averaging 17.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots, his best statistics since 2009-10.

The co-MVP of the 2000 All-Star game joined a group that includes Michael Jordan for fifth-most selections. Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett, both voted to start, and Shaquille O'Neal all were picked 15 times. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the career leader as a 19-time All-Star.

The reserves were voted by the head coaches from each conference, who had to select two guards, three frontcourt players and two players regardless of position. They were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.

With centers Chandler and Noah, East coaches passed on Brooklyn's Brook Lopez, the leading scorer for a resurgent team that is right behind the Knicks for the Atlantic Division lead. Perennial All-Stars Deron Williams and Joe Johnson of the Nets also missed out, as did Boston's Paul Pierce.

Lee gave the Warriors their first All-Star since Latrell Sprewell in 1997, but coach Mark Jackson and his team hoped for more. However, Stephen Curry wasn't selected despite averaging 20.9 points. He's the league's eighth-leading scorer and the highest one who won't be in Houston for the Feb. 17 showcase.

Lee called his selection "bittersweet" because Curry ? the first person to send him a congratulatory text ? wasn't picked.

"In our practice facility, there's that All-Star chart and it stops at '97 and there hasn't been any since. So the whole team was really excited with the improved record this year and to get one or both of our guys on there," Lee said. "I'm really excited to be the one that goes and represents our team. I wish Steph could be a part of it and maybe he'll still be able to. I'm just very, very excited. It's been a long time for the Bay Area fans. Not only to have an All-Star, but to be winning games."

Voted as East starters by fan voting along with Garnett were Miami's LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, New York's Carmelo Anthony and Boston's Rajon Rondo.

The West starting five is Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard of the Lakers, Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, and Clippers teammates Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.

The Clippers were hoping for a third All-Star, but sixth-man Jamal Crawford wasn't picked.

Commissioner David Stern would choose the replacement if any players are injured.

Randolph leads the NBA with 27 double-doubles and becomes the first Grizzlies player with multiple selections.

"It is truly an honor to be named by the NBA's coaches to the 2013 Western Conference All-Star team," he said in a statement. "I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to playing with the best players in the world."

The leaders of the teams with the best winning percentage in their conference through games of Feb. 3 will be the coaches. Miami's Erik Spoelstra has the inside track on the East spot, while San Antonio's Gregg Popovich and the Clippers' Vinny Del Negro are battling for the West honor since Scott Brooks, whose Thunder have the league's best record, is ineligible after coaching last year.

Irving, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and Holiday were rewarded for outstanding individual seasons even though their teams are well below .500. Irving is the Cavaliers' first All-Star since James, the only other East player averaging at least 20 points and five assists.

"It's one of the best days of my life," Irving said Thursday night, shortly after also being honored as Cleveland's professional athlete of the year award at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards. "It's a big deal for me and it's a big deal for the city of Cleveland to be picked as an All-Star for the first time. I'm turning 21 on March 23 and to be with those guys, to see those names on TV, that was truly a blessing."

The 22-year-old Holiday, the youngest All-Star in franchise history, is averaging 19.0 points and 9.0 assists but feared the 76ers' 17-25 mark would work against him.

"I thought so. I definitely thought so. I think anybody else probably would, too," he said while watching a Philadelphia Flyers game. "We're not getting on a winning streak or anything like that. I just tried to stay positive and not talk about it."

Brain structure of infants predicts language skills at one year

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Using a brain-imaging technique that examines the entire infant brain, researchers have found that the anatomy of certain brain areas ? the hippocampus and cerebellum ? can predict children's language abilities at 1 year of age.

The University of Washington study is the first to associate these brain structures with future language skills. The results are published in the January issue of the journal Brain and Language.

"The brain of the baby holds an infinite number of secrets just waiting to be uncovered, and these discoveries will show us why infants learn languages like sponges, far surpassing our skills as adults," said co-author Patricia Kuhl, co-director of the UW's Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences.

Children's language skills soar after they reach their first birthdays, but little is known about how infants' early brain development seeds that path. Identifying which brain areas are related to early language learning could provide a first glimpse of development going awry, allowing for treatments to begin earlier.

"Infancy may be the most important phase of postnatal brain development in humans," said Dilara Deniz Can, lead author and a UW postdoctoral researcher. "Our results showing brain structures linked to later language ability in typically developing infants is a first step toward examining links to brain and behavior in young children with linguistic, psychological and social delays."

In the study, the researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to measure the brain structure of a mix of 19 boys and girls at 7 months of age. The researchers used a measurement called voxel-based morphometry to determine the concentration of gray matter, consisting of nerve cells, and of white matter, which make up the network of connections throughout the brain.

The study is the first to relate the outcomes of this whole-brain imaging technique to predict future ability in infants. The whole-brain approach freed the researchers from having to select a few brain regions for study ahead of time, ones scientists might have expected to be involved based on adult data.

Five months later, when the children were about 1 year old they returned to the lab for a language test. This test included measures of the children's babbling, recognition of familiar names and words, and their ability to produce different types of sounds.

"At this age, children typically don't say many words," Deniz Can said. "So we rely on babbling and the ability to comprehend language as a sign of early language mastery."

Infants with a greater concentration of gray and white matter in the cerebellum and the hippocampus showed greater language ability at age 1. This is the first study to identify a relationship between language and the cerebellum and hippocampus in infants. Neither brain area is well-known for its role in language: the cerebellum is typically linked to motor learning, while the hippocampus is commonly recognized as a memory processor.

"Looking at the whole brain produced a surprising result and scientists live for surprises. It wasn't the language areas of the infant brain that predicted their future linguistic skills, but instead brain areas linked to motor abilities and memory processing," Kuhl said. "Infants have to listen and memorize the sound patterns used by the people in their culture, and then coax their own mouths and tongues to make these sounds in order join the social conversation and get a response from their parents."

The findings could reflect infants' abilities to master the motor planning for speech and to develop the memory requirements for keeping the sound patterns in mind.

"The brain uses many general skills to learn language," Kuhl said. "Knowing which brain regions are linked to this early learning could help identify children with developmental disabilities and provide them with early interventions that will steer them back toward a typical developmental path."

Todd Richards, a UW professor of radiology, was another co-author. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Santa Fe Institute Consortium.

Intel's Trying To Help Stephen Hawking Get His Speech Back Up to Speed

Stephen Hawking is a survivor. He's been valiantly holding his own against ALS disease for 50 years now, but it's still taking its toll. The cheek-twitching mechanism he's been using to talk for the past 10 years isn't quite as efficient as it used to be. He's down to one word per minute at times, but Intel's CTO is working hard on a fix. More »

Oil little changed, investors weigh global economy

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil remained close to four-month highs Friday after new data showed China's economy rebounded and a global demand forecast rose.

Benchmark oil for February delivery fell 5 cents to $95.44 per barrel in afternoon trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Crude finished at $95.49 a barrel Thursday, the highest since Sept. 17, on more evidence that the housing and jobs market are recovering.

Prices have remained steady at the pump, however, with the average price for a gallon of regular drifting down from $3.31 a week ago to $3.29 on Friday. That's right about where it started the year.

On Friday the global economy took center stage for energy traders. The economy of China, the second largest energy consumer in the world behind the U.S., grew by 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter, up from the previous quarter's 7.4 percent, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics.

The prospect of more oil demand from China helped push up an oil consumption forecast from the International Energy Agency. Global oil demand is expected to rise to 90.8 million barrels a day this year, according to the IEA in Paris, which released its monthly report Friday. That's 930,000 daily barrels more than in 2012 and 240,000 more than the agency's previous forecast released in December.

Lingering concerns about the U.S. economy may be weighing on crude prices Friday, with lawmakers wrangling over spending cuts and the nation's debt ceiling. After a week in which the S&P 500 index repeatedly reached new five-year highs, investors on Wall Street paused. Major indexes were little changed in afternoon trading.

Independent analyst Jim Ritterbusch said the current price for a barrel of oil may be unsustainable.

"The market appears to be sending off signals that some assistance from continued stock market gains and a weakening US dollar will be needed if this advance is to continue."

Natural gas futures rose, however. The price is up about 6 percent in the past week with a chillier forecast pointing to heavier use of the thermostat in many parts of the country.

Energy analyst Addison Armstrong points out that below-normal temperatures are expected in February across the Midwest and Chicago, the nation's largest gas-consuming region.

Natural gas rose 8 cents on Friday to $3.57 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Meanwhile, Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 66 cents to $111.76 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 2 cents at $2.78 a gallon.

? Heating oil rose 2 cents at $3.03 a gallon.

2 dead, 13 hurt after helicopter crashes in London

LONDON (AP) ? A helicopter crashed into a crane and fell on a crowded street in central London during rush hour Wednesday, sending flames and black plumes of smoke into the air. The pilot and one person on the ground were killed and 13 others injured, officials said.

The helicopter crashed in misty weather just south of the River Thames near the Underground and mainline train station at Vauxhall, and close to the headquarters of spy agency MI6.

Police said one person had critical injuries. Six were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries and seven treated at the scene, ambulance officials said.

"It was something of a miracle that this was not many, many times worse," police Cmdr. Neil Basu said.

The pilot, who was killed, had requested to divert and land at the nearby London Heliport because of bad weather, the heliport said in a statement.

"The London Heliport never gained contact with the helicopter," the statement said.

The aircraft, an AgustaWestland 109, was on a commercial flight, said Philip Amadeus, managing director of RotorMotion, an executive helicopter charter business.

The company identified the pilot as Peter Barnes, 50, whose career included flying in films including "Saving Private Ryan" and the James Bond movie "Die Another Day."

"He was a very highly skilled pilot, one of the most experienced in the U.K., with over 12,000 flying hours," Amadeus said. "We are devastated by the loss of a highly valued colleague and very dear friend."

Police identified the other fatality as 39-year-old Matthew Wood, from south London.

The crash unfolded at the height of the morning commute when thousands of pedestrians in the area were trying to get to work. The weather at the time was overcast and misty with fog and poor visibility, according to the Met Office weather forecasting service.

Video from the scene showed wreckage burning in a street, and black smoke in the area, with a line of flaming fuel and debris marking the area where the helicopter smashed down. Witnesses said the disaster unfolded when the helicopter hit a crane atop a 50-story residential building, the St. George Wharf Tower.

"I was 100 percent sure it was a terrorist attack," said Allen Crosbie, site manager for the landscape firm Maylim Ltd., who was working at the scene.

"There was debris everywhere, a ton of black smoke. Parts of the crane, parts of the helicopter. I heard bang, bang ? I presume it was the helicopter hitting the crane and then the ground. People were just panicking."

William Belsey, 25, a landscape worker, also said he heard the helicopter hit the crane.

"Luckily the crane operator was late for work this morning. He picked a good day to be late," Belsey said.

Mayor Boris Johnson said the crane had been secured and was not in danger of collapsing.

Basu said one of the dead was the pilot of the commercial helicopter, which had been flying from Redhill, south of London. No one else was thought to be aboard, Basu said; the other fatality was a person on the ground.

British aviation authorities had issued a "notice to airmen" warning pilots about the crane, which extended to 770 feet (235 meters) above ground. The crane is lit at night, and police said investigators would look at whether the light was faulty.

The area, roughly 10 blocks from the major Waterloo train and Underground station, is extremely congested during the morning rush hour. Many commuters arrive at the main line stations from London's southern suburbs and transfer to buses or trains there.

Aviation expert Chris Yates said that weather may have played a role. Investigators also would look at whether the crane had navigation lights.

"The question then becomes whether the pilot was fit," Yates said.

Microfinance and poverty alleviation in sub-Saharan Africa: Research roundup

HausaNigeria_Wikipedia

Just 24% of adults living in sub-Saharan Africa have a bank account with a formal financial institution. Only the Middle East/North African region has a lower participation rate, according to World Bank data. Over the past decade, however, microfinance in the region has gained momentum, with improvements in the regulatory environment, an increase in the operational efficiency of microfinance providers and continued donor interest in supporting the sector.

Analysis of the true impact of microfinance is decidedly mixed, however. It?s also worth bearing in mind that programs may operate very differently in diverse country settings. Some researchers have found that microfinance services, including credit and savings, have done little to alleviate poverty across sub-Saharan Africa ? and in some cases have even exacerbated it; but others believe that microfinance is a necessary tool in creating the kinds of microenterprises that help lift people out of poverty, especially in environments with few formal employment opportunities.

Recent research reveals a number of characteristics of microfinance that can affect its implementation across the continent, including: how the economic and social impacts of microfinance can differ by gender; the role provision of business development services can play in improving microfinance?s ability to fight poverty; and the extent to which the penetration of financial institutions is related to a country?s economic inequality.

The following are a representative sample of studies investigating these and other ways microfinance is affecting poverty alleviation and development across sub-Saharan Africa.

_____

?The Impact of Microfinance in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review of the Evidence?

World Development, 2012

Summary: ?Microfinance is seen as a key development tool, and despite the current deepening crisis within the industry, it continues to grow in sub-Saharan Africa. We systematically reviewed the evidence of the impacts of micro-credit and micro-savings on poor people in sub-Saharan Africa. We considered impacts on income, savings, expenditure, and the accumulation of assets, as well as non-financial outcomes including health, nutrition, food security, education, child labor, women?s empowerment, housing, job creation, and social cohesion. The available evidence shows that microfinance does harm, as well as good, to the livelihoods of the poor.?

?

?Rethinking the Impact of Microfinance in Africa: ?Business Change? or Social Emancipation?

European Journal of Development Research, 2010

Abstract: ?This article questions received wisdom that the benefits of microfinance start with poverty reduction and are subsequently followed by social emancipation. Taking the case of Uganda and by using a consensual people-centered relevance test to assess the impact of microfinance on poverty alleviation, microfinance is shown not to improve the well-being of microfinance clients much, with only marginal well-being gains achieved by clients. However, a subsequent (gender) power relations analysis reveals that in spite of these marginal well-being gains, women clients achieved more emancipation. The article therefore calls for a rethinking of the microfinance outreach campaign in Africa, and of the controversy between the adoption of a business or welfarist approach to microfinance, suggesting that social emancipation should be pursued in its own right rather than waiting for poverty reduction to occur first.?

?

?Poverty Alleviation and Microcredit in Sub-Saharan Africa?

The Clute Institute International Business & Economics Research Journal, 2009

Abstract: ?This paper analyzes the incidence of extreme poverty in [sub-Saharan Africa] in relation to the socio-economic infrastructure of the region, its land tenure system, and particularly the growth of microcredit and microentrepreneurship. Using primary data, the paper analyzes the growth of microcredit which operates through 297 microfinance institutes in 34 countries of the region. Extensive use of microfinancing has shown to reduce extreme poverty among the users of microcredit. Use of microcredit at the grassroots level creates a class of microentrepreneur with characteristics similar to the model of entrepreneurship developed by Schumpeter. The study concludes that there is a prospect for the growth of microentrepreneurship in at least 13 countries of SSA allowing for new employment opportunities, savings among borrowers, and reduction of extreme poverty.?

?

?The Make-Buy Decision in Marketing Financial Services for Poverty Alleviation?

Journal of Financial Services Marketing, 2011

Abstract: ?In this article, we suggest how poverty reduction can be achieved through alleviation measures that enable the poor to satisfy their needs by focusing on the needs of others. Instead of a direct focus on the consumption needs of the poor, we suggest an indirect approach to satisfying these needs, by providing the poor with credit and consulting services for entrepreneurial businesses that focus on the needs of buyers. Loans to the poor who lack collateral are increasingly based on group lending techniques that rely on joint liability to secure repayment, which have come to be known as microfinance. We suggest that in addition to credit, financial services for the poor must include strategic advice and assistance to select markets, and make the products (goods and services) for sale in their output markets with the financial services bought in their input markets. Financial services for the poor must include not only money to invest in a business but also consulting services to help the business succeed.?

?

?Microfinance, Inequality and Vulnerability: Empirical Analysis from Central African Countries?

Journal of Development and Agricultural Economics, 2011

Abstract: ?This study examines the relationship of microfinance, inequality and vulnerability by providing a cross-country empirical study of 11 developing countries in Central Africa. Microfinance plays an important role in the financial market in many African countries. Although microfinance is expected to significantly affect macro variables, we lack enough empirical research on impact analysis at the macro level, such as the effect of microfinance on inequality and vulnerability. Results indicate that the number of microfinance institutions has a negative impact on the Gini index in Central African countries. When the microfinance institutions in the country become dense, inequalities decrease.?

?

?Microfinance and Female Empowerment: Do Institutions Matter??

Women?s Studies International Forum, 2012

Synopsis: ?Microfinance programmes increasingly target poor women in developing countries with the expectation that, besides poverty reduction, having access to microcredit advances their empowerment. However, research provides conflicting evidence and shows that empowerment may not, or may only be partially achieved. This study explores if variations in the socio-cultural, economic and microfinance organisational contexts explain why some programmes are more successful than others by comparing the results of two microfinance providers in Ethiopia. The study demonstrates that variations in formal and informal rules indeed matter for how microfinance programmes work out. The study also shows that microfinance programmes may enable women to generate extra income and improve their asset base but may also perpetuate inequalities as well as reconfirm a gender-specific division of labour.?

?

?Does Microfinance Reduce Rural Poverty? Evidence Based on Household Panel Data from Northern Ethiopia?

American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2011

Abstract: ?Evidence on the long-term impacts of microfinance credit is scarce. We use a unique four-round panel dataset on farm households in northern Ethiopia that had access to microfinance, observed on two key poverty indicators: household consumption and housing improvements. Fixed-effects and random trend models are used to reduce potential selection biases due to time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity and individual trends therein. Results show that borrowing indeed causally increased consumption and housing improvements. A flexible specification that takes into account repeated borrowings also suggests that borrowing has cumulative long-term effects on these outcomes, implying that short-term impact estimates may underestimate credit effects.?

?

?Poverty Reduction through Entrepreneurship: Microcredit, Learning and Ambivalence Amongst Women in Urban Tanzania?

International Journal of Educational Development, 2012

Abstract: ?This article explores women?s experiences of their roles as entrepreneurs, and reflects on how the learning processes and outcomes associated with microcredit schemes ?shape the self,? often in quite unpredictable ways. The article is based on an ethnographic study of disadvantaged women in Dar es Salaam, and follows them as they participate in NGO-based training schemes, ?practice? entrepreneurship in a range of income-generating settings, and negotiate the consequences of the new subjectivities on which the independent, entrepreneurial citizen is based. Like many microcredit programmes, the majority of women in the study were full-time housewives before joining the scheme. Others had left their jobs following retrenchment, prejudice or gender discrimination. In all cases, they started their own businesses with little or no business experience or education. Whilst some appear to have embraced the new opportunities, others have struggled. In all cases, microcredit and the associated learning processes produced contradictory and ambivalent feelings of success and failure, hope and disappointment, progress and exclusion. The article explores these ambivalences in order to critique development initiatives that are based on universal notions of autonomy and self-determination in contexts shaped by dependence and structural inequality.?

AMC crime drama 'The Killing' isn't dead after all

(AP) ? "The Killing" will live another season.

AMC and Fox Television Studios announced Tuesday the return of this crime drama for a third season after months spent in limbo.

The show's stars, Mireille (MEE'ray) Enos and Joel Kinnaman, will be back, as will executive producer Veena Sud. Production resumes Feb. 25 in Vancouver, which substitutes for Seattle, the show's setting. No premiere date was mentioned.

The first two seasons concentrated on the murder case of teenager Rosie Larsen. The 12-episode third season will focus on and solve a new crime.

The show's revival, though surprising to some viewers who had given it up for dead, had been rumored for several weeks.

"The Killing" premiered on the AMC network in April 2011, and during its first two seasons averaged 1.9 million viewers.

Obama uses press conference to hammer Republicans over debt ceiling

Bloomberg

President Barack Obama says raising the debt ceiling is needed to pay for spending that's already occurred, not new spending.

Staff Baltimore Business Journal

President Barack Obama used the final press conference of his first term to attack Republicans for tying an increase in the federal government's debt ceiling to additional spending cuts, The Business Journals reported.

If the debt ceiling isn't raised on time, Social Security checks and veterans' benefits would be delayed, troops might not get paid, and federal contracts with small businesses might not be honored, Obama said.

How You Build 20% Equity in Your Blue Mountain Condo In Just A ...

Think this is not possible?? It most certainly is.? You CAN build 10, 20 or even 30% equity in a property here if you have vision and courage.? Here is a classic case in point.

Earlier this year, I had a condominium listed for sale in a prime location opposite the Village at Blue Mountain and backing onto a private, wooded area.? The condo had 3 bedrooms, two baths and lots of living space at a price well below newer condos in the area.? This unit was clean but admittedly tired with pass? d?cor and in need of an upgrade. You can see the BEFORE pictures below.? The asking price reflected this. During the time it was listed for sale, literally dozens of people viewed it and a few low offers came forward.? Everyone complained it was in need of an upgrade and they didn?t really want to spend the time doing that for fear they would not get their value back out.? Hogwash.

I bet many of those people who have since purchased, bought something and have done little to change their surroundings.? I also bet those same people have not built one cent in equity given that condo values have not gone up in and around the Village at Blue since then.

In contrast, along came a family with vision who bought the tired condo.? They knew the location was unbeatable, the price was right and with a good contractor, a complete renovation could be done and still bring them in under market value.? And so they did.

During a recent visit, the new owners explained to me that they had a total of four visits with the builder and the balance was done by email.? Some time of course had to be spent in finalizing the design and making product and colour selections but over-all, not a huge time commitment had to be put in.? They are both very busy professionals, living in Toronto with two young children as well.

Now here is the best part.? I would estimate that with the original purchase price along with the renovation costs, these smart owners have already built at least 20% equity in their condo if not more.? They have also dramatically increased the potential income should they decide to rent it out from time to time.? Their great sense of design, taste and courage to take on a renovation has really paid off.? Have a look at these BEFORE and AFTER pictures.
