New Bulgarian patriarch enthroned by tarnished Orthodox Church

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's new Orthodox patriarch was enthroned in a mass in Sofia on Sunday that leaves the soft-spoken theologian the task of restoring the reputation of a church hurt by links to businessmen and communist secret police.

Neofit, Bishop of Rousse, took over the 1,100-year old church, which survived centuries of Turkish domination and decades of communism, just as Bulgaria heads for early elections by May after the government resigned on Wednesday during protests over the cost of living and corruption.

Protesters in Sofia kept a promise to stay away from the capital's main cathedral, St. Alexander Nevski, so as not to interfere with the ceremonial mass of inauguration.

About 80 percent of Bulgarians say they are Orthodox Christians - the mainstream religion also in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Greece, Romania and Serbia, but only few see churchgoing as important to their lives, recent surveys show.

Trust in the Orthodox Church was shaken after a history commission showed in January 2012 that 11 of its 15 bishops collaborated with the former communist era secret police.

Neofit, born Simeon Dimitrov, also had a file with the much feared Darzhavna Sigurnost, but while his 16-page entry contained information about him, it preserved no reports made by him to the police.

The election by a church council of the bespectacled Neofit, 67, known for theological learning, humble demeanour and exquisite singing, was welcomed by believers and analysts who see him as a worthy successor to Patriarch Maxim who died in November aged 98.

"Neofit will be a patriarch who will not shame Bulgarians. He will restore the spiritual dignity of the Church," said political analyst Nikolai Mihailov.

The luxurious lifestyle of some bishops has fed disillusionment with the church, and the restoration of the little known church title of archon -- given to businessmen often after hefty donations - has also stirred disapproval.

Neofit graduated from the Theological Academy in Sofia in 1971 and specialized in Moscow for two years. He took the name Neofit and was sworn in as a monk in the Troyan Monastery by late Patriarch Maxim in 1975.

He taught church singing at Sofia's Theological Academy, led its choir and was its rector before becoming a bishop in 1994.

Neofit's inauguration coincided with the last Sunday address by Pope Benedict, leader of millions of Catholic Christians, before his resignation.

Bishop from Malta Shows Respect for Lesbian and Gay Couples

http://www.la-croix.com/var/bayard/storage/images/lacroix/religion/urbi-orbi/carnet/mgr-charles-j.-scicluna-quitte-la-doctrine-de-la-foi-pour-le-diocese-de-la-valette-malte-_np_-2012-10-08-862014/27724912-1-fre-FR/Mgr-Charles-J.-Scicluna-quitte-la-Doctrine-de-la-foi-pour-le-diocese-de-La-Valette-Malte_article_main.jpgIn what seems to becoming a trend in Europe of slight affirmation of gay and lesbian relationships, an auxiliary bishop from Malta recently reprimanded a Catholic who negatively characterized those relationships as based on lust.

PinkNews.co.uk reports:

?Malta?s Auxiliary Bishop, Charles Scicluna, has stepped in to condemn a provocative letter written by zealous Catholic churchgoer Joe Zammit who claims there can only be lust and not love between gay people.
?Bishop?Scicluna told the Sunday Times of Malta: ?Joe Zammit has managed to do a great disservice to the Catholic ethos by presenting a caricature of the Church?s teaching on gay relationships.? ?
Bishops Scicluna did not endorse marriage between gay and lesbian couples, but his comments reflect a new awareness on the part of some bishops in expressing respect and positive regard for gay and lesbian relationships:
?Bishop Scicluna maintained that ?Gay people are not called to marriage which is the permanent union between one man and one woman open to the gift of parenthood,? but then added, ?they are indeed called to chaste friendship and chaste friendship is chaste love.?
? ?To say, as Mr Zammit keeps harping, that ?there can never be love but only lust between homosexuals? is to deny the truth of what the Church teaches.? . . .
?Bishop?Scicluna felt compelled to step in and dismissed Mr Zammit?s comments saying his opinion ?does not represent the teachings of the Church.? ?
Bishop Scicluna joins the French bishops, British Bishops, and a Vatican official who recently made similar comments regarding respect for gay and lesbian couples.

Let?s hope and pray that American bishops will soon follow suit. ??

It will be a giant step forward if bishops can refrain from their inaccurate rhetoric which unilaterally disparages gay and lesbian couples.

New Haven kids see college chances in squash game

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - (AP) -- Every carom of Osuman Imoro's squash ball takes him closer to college.

It's no accident, either. Since he was in fifth grade, Imoro and dozens of other city students have learned and played squash with the express purpose of someday landing spots at the nation's best colleges.

That's how they bounce at Squash Haven.

"People always ask, 'Why squash?'" said Executive Director Julie Greenwood. "But I think squash is uniquely suited to what we're doing. The sport is played at elite institutions around the country, and playing it sends a very subtle message to these kids, that they belong here."

Now in its sixth year, Squash Haven works with 79 New Haven students who come to Yale University's sprawling Payne Whitney Gymnasium three times a week, year-round. The kids get academic tutoring in classrooms on the first floor, plus top-notch squash training on the fourth floor -- where Yale has 15 gleaming courts in the Brady Squash Center and provides a home for the United States Squash Hall of Fame.

The kids are not allowed to use the elevator, incidentally. It's not the Squash Haven way.

"It's pretty cool to think of these kids who started out not even knowing what this sport was, now playing it on a varsity level," said Christi Boscarino-Elligers, Squash Haven's academic director. "There are some kids for whom Squash Haven has been absolutely transformative."

Take Osuman, for instance. He's a 14-year-old freshman at Wilbur Cross High School. A refugee from Ghana, "Oosie" joined Squash Haven when he was a fifth-grader at East Rock Global Studies Magnet School.

He's now the best urban squash player in his age group in the country.

Up on the fourth floor, resting on a bench between matches, Osuman exuded a quiet confidence. "We get more done here than in any other program," he said, keeping one eye fixed on the game on a nearby court. "They motivate us to do well in school."

As for his future, Osuman is leaning toward Drexel University in Philadelphia. "They have a good science program," he said. "And good squash, too."

Squash Haven is part of the National Urban Squash Education Association, a network of independent, nonprofit programs in cities such as Boston, New York, Denver, San Diego, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago and Baltimore. The first program, Boston's SquashBusters, began in 1996, and the concept reached New Haven in the 2007-08 school year.

It has grown steadily ever since.

"I've been in it since they first started," said Joby Davis, a 15-year-old sophomore at Wilbur Cross. "We weren't really good at the sport then, but we kept going back out on the court. I like how fast and competitive it is."

Over the years, Joby has had to explain the rules of squash many times to his friends and acquaintances. "Oh yeah," he acknowledged. "But we have schools all over that have players now, so some kids know."

Here's something else Joby knows: he's planning to go to college, preferably at Franklin and Marshall or Drexel.

Alexandra Matamoros, a 15-year-old sophomore at Career High School, has her sights on either Columbia or Wesleyan universities, where she'd like to study criminal justice.

"My friends make jokes that I'm hitting a ball with fruit," Alexandra said, still out of breath from a match that ended just seconds earlier. She credited Squash Haven with focusing her on school. "I take it much more seriously now," she said.

Each year, Squash Haven holds open houses and visits city schools to introduce the program to local students and their families. Greenwood said they look for kids with an academic spark who have at least a modest amount of athletic ability.

"We're not looking for the Michael Jordan of squash," Greenwood said.

There are written applications and tryouts for Squash Haven. Once kids are accepted, they must attend at least 90 percent of the practices and classroom sessions. If a student gets more than one C in a grading period, he or she will get additional classroom time.

"We look for motivation and commitment," Greenwood said. "If you're in fifth grade, we're telling you you'll be with us until you go to college."

Greenwood, coach John DeWitt and the Squash Haven staff have nurtured at least 25 ranked players, plus dozens of others who likely will make squash a lifelong recreational sport.

Along the way, they've also worked on kids' writing skills, homework habits and SAT preparation.

"The athletic piece of this is the carrot, especially for the boys," said Boscarino-Elligers, a former New Haven schoolteacher. "Once they're in the door, we do all kinds of good stuff. It's an educator's dream."

Just then, the newbies -- this year's fifth-graders -- pile into the Brady Squash Center. They energetically grab racquets and await their court assignments. They've been playing only since November.

"It's excellent," said 11-year-old Jorge Barrios. "I never held a squash racquet before. It helps me with my academics."

Video: What are the chances the next pope is American?

>>> pope benedict met with italy's president this morning just five days before he steps down as the leader of the catholic church . there's some speculation today about whether an american cardinal could replace him as pope. anne thompson is in vatican city with more. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, erica. there's all kinds of chatter here at the vatican where pope benedict xvi is back on the job after his week-long lenten retreat. he appointed new bishops today to italy and mexico as people here at the vatican are getting ready for what are expected to be huge crowds for his final two events. meanwhile, there are many questions about this momentous occasion such as who will lead the church that are still unanswered. a week before pope benedict retires and there is still no clear front-runner to succeed him. however, there is a long shot. new york's gregarious cardinal timothy doland .

>> i'll do anything to get you guys to church.

>> reporter: praising catholic circles for his charismatic persona, his efforts to revitalize the church, and fighting the obama administration's contraception coverage mandate. but this week, doland was deposed about how he dealt with abusive priests as archbishop of milwaukee. what impact is this going to have on cardinal doland --

>> i think it will have zero impact on cardinal doland 's leadership within the conclave because he is a known quantity. he's a known man of integrity. he is known as someone who can communicate the catholic faith positively.

>> reporter: here in rome, another american cardinal, roger mahony , the retired archbishop of los angeles , is under fire for his role in moving and shielding abusive priests. not a contender for the papalcy, he faces his own deposition after which he will vote for the new pope. this week, an italian cardinal told a local newspaper mahoney should stay home and some american catholics agree.

>> all cardinals should be held to the highest standard. anyone whose hands are tainted should be -- should refrain from voting.

>> reporter: cardinals from ireland and belgium are also mired in scandal. but that's not likely to stop them from voting. the vatican says all cardinals under the age of 80 must vote, unless they are seriously ill or otherwise prevented from traveling. one of the things we'll be watching in the pope's final days is whether he decides to move up the start date of the conclave to choose his successor. erica?

College Football: Why the SEC Has Risen to Dominance in College Football

Dec 1, 2012; Atlanta, GA, USA; Dec 1, 2012; Atlanta, GA, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver DeAndrew White (2) holds the SEC sign after winning the 2012 SEC Championship game against the Georgia Bulldogs at the Georgia Dome. Alabama won 32-28. Mandatory Credit: Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

You have to go back to 2005 to find a BCS Championship game that was not won by a team in the SEC conference.

Since that BCS win by Texas over USC 41-38, Florida won two games, LSU and Auburn have each won one, and Alabama has captured three wins in the last four championships.

I?m only 18 years old, but I can barely remember a time when the Big Ten, Pac-12, and Big 12 were even relevant when it came to winning a national championship.

So why has the SEC become such a powerhouse in college football?

It starts with the very beginning of the SEC winning streak seven years ago, and possibly even a bit before. In 2006, The Florida Gators powered their way to a 41-14 destruction of the No. 1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.

From then on, the SEC was in complete control. Or was it really?

You see, from 2005 through 2010, there were never more than two SEC teams ranked in the top 10 teams nationally. We saw plenty of space in those other spots taken up by teams in conferences such as the Big Ten. The difference is that in each of those years, an SEC team was ranked either No. 1 or No. 2.

It?s a matter of a small group of schools carrying over success to represent a conference for an extended period of time. Really, it isn?t the whole SEC that deserves the ton of hype that it receives. Or it wasn?t always like that. It was two or three teams that had repeated success.

Are You Bad Enough For Badminton? | The Crestiad

Emily Orischak, Opinions Editor

On February 5, the Department of Recreation informed students that intramural badminton would be taking place in Lees Hall every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the month of February at 9:30 p.m.
Head coach, Cindy ?Jo? Joseph, who is in charge of recreation, decided to bring back badminton this semester because of interest shown by students in the class Olympics. Coach Jo seemed especially excited to bring back the highly anticipated sport.
?We do intramurals all year round including volleyball and badminton,? explained Coach Jo, who has been head of Recreation for the past two and a half years.

Many students participated in the class Olympics tournament and worked up quite a sweat. Even after the match for that night was finished, a group of students stayed after to continue playing because they enjoyed it.
Some students who took part in the Olympic tournament returned to Lees Hall this semester for more, but there were a few unfamiliar faces appearing on the first night and even a few more the next.
?It was fun, especially learning how to serve the birdie,? said first year nursing major, Jessyca Tompkins-Morgan, who hadn?t really played badminton before.

Tompkins-Morgan arrived late Tuesday night and learned how to time her swing so that it was able to hit the birdie. Come Thursday, Tompkins-Morgan found that she had improved considerably, smashing the birdie onto the other team?s court many times.
Katie Geible, who is a senior history major, came to badminton tournaments just to play for fun.
?It sounded interesting,? Geible said. ?I just play?and fall on the floor!?
Laughter and cheers resonated from Lees Hall last Tuesday night as other students, from first years to seniors, appeared on the court coming for the friendly competition and fun.

Junior chemistry major, Barbara Colburn, has been a part of badminton every spring since her freshman year at Cedar Crest.
?It?s one of those sports you can?t really mess up,? Colburn said just minutes before the first birdie of the semester was hit. ?You just have fun with it. And even if we do lose, we?re like ?That?s still awesome!??
Alexis Malone, a first-year biochemistry major, played badminton at her high school because it was the main sport students participated in.

Since 8th grade, Malone has taken up her racket and is enthusiastic about badminton at Cedar Crest ?because it?s badminton and it?s fun!?

While a good number of students enjoy the intense rallies back and forth and even the brilliant misses, there was a chance that badminton may not have returned this year.

?It was losing popularity,? said Coach Jo, explaining that not as many students were attending the matches in recent years.
Though badminton is to be continued throughout the month, Coach Jo explained, ?It had not been the plan to continue past February.?

However, there is still hope for those students who are avid about playing badminton. Coach Jo said that there is a possibility the intramural sport could continue for the remainder of the semester if there is enough interest shown by students.
If you are interested in being a part of the intramural badminton team, stop by Lees Hall at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights throughout the month of February, and be prepared for some fun.

Thousands Tie The Knot In First Moon Church Mass Wedding Since Founder’s Death [PHOTOS]

Thousands of people tied the knot in South Korea Sunday in the first mass wedding organized by the Unification Church since the death of its controversial founder Sun Myung Moon in September.

Some 3,500 identically-dressed couples ? many of mixed nationality who had met just days before ? took part in the ceremony at the church's headquarters in Gapyeong, east of the capital Seoul, AFP reported.

Moon, a self-styled messiah and a media-mogul, set up the Church regarded by its critics as a dangerous cult, in 1954 in Seoul. Its followers, often called Moonies, shared their leader?s strong belief in marriage and anti-Communist sentiments.

Moon, who accumulated massive wealth that included large assets in the U.S., was convicted of massive tax evasion in the 1982 and spent 11 months behind bars. Upon his release from prison, he joined with other American churches to campaign for religious freedom. Moon died five months ago, aged 92, of complications from pneumonia. An estimated 30,000 people attended his funeral.

Moon, who often paired up couples for the Church?s mass weddings, preferred cross-cultural, international marriages, which at times meant that the partners did not share a common language.

Follow us?? Google Plus

Sunday's event was presided over by Moon's 70-year-old widow Hak Ja Han, who picked partners for some 400 of the Church's members a few days before at an "engagement ceremony.?

"Yeah, I was pretty nervous," an attendee Jin Davidson, a 21-year-old student from the U.S., told AFP.

Davidson, whose Australian father and Japanese mother were matched by Moon, said he did not know Japanese and his Japanese bride, Kotona Shimizu, also 21, spoke ?only a little English.?

?But we see it as an exciting challenge and proof of our faith," he told AFP.

Pakistan Shi'ites demand protection from militants

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Thousands of Pakistani Shi'ites furious over a sectarian bombing that killed 85 people protested on Monday, demanding that security forces protect them from hardline Sunni groups.

The attack, near a street market in the southwestern city of Quetta on Saturday, highlighted the government's failure to crack down on militancy in nuclear-armed Pakistan just a few months before a general election is due.

While the Taliban and al Qaeda remain a major source of instability, Sunni extremists, who regard Shi'ites as non-Muslims, have emerged as another significant security threat.

Shi'ite frustrations with waves of attacks on them have reached boiling point.

In Quetta, some ethnic Shi'ite Hazaras are refusing to bury their dead until the army and security forces go after Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), the group which claimed responsibility for the latest bombing.

Around 4,000 men, women and children placed 71 bodies beside a Shi'ite place of worship. Muslim tradition requires that bodies are buried as soon as possible and leaving them above ground is a potent expression of grief and pain.

Some coffins contained three of four bags of remains, with photographs of the dead on top. Grown men wept beside a hand-written list of victims hanging on a wall.

Protesters chanted "stop killing Shi'ites".

"We stand firm for our demands of handing over the city to army and carrying out targeted operation against terrorists and their supporters," said Syed Muhammad Hadi, spokesman for an alliance of Shi'ite groups.

"We will not bury the bodies unless our demands are met."

The paramilitary Frontier Corps is largely responsible for security in Baluchistan province, of which Quetta is the capital, but Shi'ites say it is unable or unwilling to protect them.

LeJ has stepped up suicide bombings and shootings in a bid to destabilize strategic U.S. ally Pakistan and install a Sunni theocracy, an echo of the strategy that al Qaeda pursued to try and trigger a civil war in Iraq several years ago.

The group was behind a bombing last month in Quetta, near the Afghan border, that killed nearly 100 people.

In Karachi, a strike to protest against the Quetta bloodshed brought Pakistan's commercial hub to a standstill.

Authorities boosted security as protesters blocked roads, disrupted rail services to other parts of the country and torched vehicles. Protesters clashed with police who stopped them entering the airport.

The roughly 500,000-strong Hazara people in Quetta, who speak a Persian dialect, have distinct features and are an easy target.

The LeJ has had historically close ties to elements in the security forces, who see the group as an ally in any potential war with neighboring India. Security forces deny such links.

Why academic writing is so bad | The War Room

In a recent post on his blog, Steve Walt of the Harvard Kennedy School amplifies on a discussion at Andrew Sullivan?s new blog about why academic writing is so bad.?It?s well worth reading, because I think Walt gets to the heart of the matter: academic writing stinks because academic writers intentionally mean it to stink.

Walt nods to the difficult of the some of the subjects involved, noting that if you?re writing about epistemology, you?re going to have some dense prose on your hands no matter how able you are as a writer. But then he gets to the real reasons academic writing is so ghastly:

The first problem is that many academics (and especially younger ones) tend to confuse incomprehensibility with profundity. If they write long and ponderous sentences and throw in lots of jargon, they assume that readers will be dazzled by their erudition and more likely to accept whatever it is they are saying uncritically.

Moreover, jargon is a way for professional academics to remind ordinary people that they are part of a guild with specialized knowledge that outsiders lack, and younger scholars often fear that if they don?t sound like a professional scholar, then readers won?t believe what they are saying no matter how solid their arguments and evidence are.

The second problem is the fear of being wrong. If your prose is clear and your arguments are easy to follow, then readers can figure out what you are saying and they can hold you to account. If you are making forecasts (or if the theory you are advancing has implications for the future), then you will look bad if your predictions are clearly stated and then fail. If your argument has obvious testable implications, others can run the tests and see how well your claims stand up.

But if your prose is muddy and obscure or your arguments are hedged in every conceivable direction, then readers may not be able to figure out what you?re really saying and you can always dodge criticism by claiming to have been misunderstood.

Amen. Preach it, brother.

I?ve carped about this before; back in July I wrote about a piece of impenetrable garble I had come across in a review of an equally impenetrable book about Russia and got a hurt, angry blast from the author. People who write poorly tend to have thin skins. (My own sentences, of course, are collections of shiny pearls, each an object of unspeakable beauty. Ahem.)

I was thinking about this because a friend of mine has to attend a professional seminar on information technology, and his packet of assigned readings include some scholarly articles that are so bad they?re good.? Here?s an except from an article called ?A Political Economy of the Substrate Network,? whatever that means:

Applying the economic framework of socialism to online collaboration, Kelly?s article is a classic symbol of the techno-ideology that surrounds the digital commons, a sign that the effusive rhetoric of the ?networked information economy? (Benkler, 2006) is alive and well in the public consciousness and has yet to reach its conclusion in the crisis of capital. This reflects this paper?s core criticism of the ideology of free culture, specifically that its notion of ?free? pays lip service to an imperial credo aligned more closely to the social factory than to the necessary apparatuses of an idealised peer-to-peer economy, rolling out a vista from Utopia to YouTube that wilfully [sic] glosses the conflicts inherent in immaterial labour.

Yeah? So?s your old man.

All of this reminds me of the 1996 Alan Sokal hoax, which should have been a wake-up call to the academic community. Instead, academics acted like embarrassed cats trying to kick litter over an inconvenient piddle on the rug. Gibberish still runs rampant in the journals, and Walt?s right: if ordinary people could understand academic articles, the writers would not only lose their claim to intellectual superiority, but they would actually have to defend their ideas?assuming any are to be found, of course.

Asmussen says euro zone in better shape than 12 months ago

BERLIN (Reuters) - European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen said on Sunday the euro zone is in better shape than a year ago thanks to positive budget consolidation efforts in individual countries, the European Union's fiscal pact and ECB actions.

Speaking on German network ARD, Asmussen said the euro zone was in better shape now than a year ago despite the weak growth in the fourth quarter of 2012. He cited in particular Italy prime minister Mario Monti's budget consolidation efforts.

"We're in better shape now than 12 months ago due to several factors," he said. "There was positive steps taken by individual member states, such as the budget consolidation by the Monti government.

"There was also the fiscal pact agreed at the European Union level," he added, referring to the European budget discipline treaty. "And there was also the actions of the ECB that were within our mandate. So we're in better shape even though growth in the fourth quarter was weak."

Chris Smith and his band submitted their song "This Way Home," which is now used for commercials for "House Hunters" on HGTV.

And there was another perk in winning the contest, a spot at a Texas Music Festival, March 12th.

Chris tells us, "The song has been played on the commercials and everything, which is awesome. And then, as a result of the contest, one of the wins was that I get to go play a showcase at South by Southwest and so, it is fast approaching. And so I decided I wanted to do, get some new music ready for them, so I've been writing a lot of songs."

Another photo of PlayStation 4 'prototype' controller surfaces ahead of Sony event

It was only yesterday that Destructoid gave the world its first glimpse at a purported controller for Sony's next-gen PlayStation console. Since then, other publications including IGN and Kotaku have confirmed the image as legitimate while being careful to emphasize we're likely seeing a prototype design that could differ substantially with what Sony is expected to unveil next week. Yet the same controller has turned up in a second photo, this time from another angle. Thankfully the handles appear a fair bit longer here than in the original shot, and you're again able to make out those concave analog sticks, an LED strip at the top, and what looks to be an LCD or some type of touchpad at the controller's center.

New in this shot, however, is what appears to be a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack situated at the bottom. We can only presume that's intended for a voice chat accessory. Additionally, Sony seems to have separated the start and select buttons to a wide degree; they're faintly visible next to the directional pad and triangle button, respectively. Unfortunately the sourcing for this particular photo is a bit shaky. It's been posted to a few gaming forums so far, but it's unclear where exactly this picture first originated. We've put it through some tests and see no clear signs of doctoring or Photoshop deception. We're no closer to knowing if this is the same hardware consumers will find packed in with the inevitable PlayStation 4, but the answer should be clear come next Wednesday.

Apple beaten by Amazon in reputation study, user satisfaction survey blasts Apple, Jobs as Russian General and iPad cupcake topper

Valentine's Day sees an iPad cupcake topper tutorial emerge, Apple gets knocked off the top spot by Amazon in a reputation study and gets attacked in satisfaction survey, and Steve Jobs gets painted as Russian Army General.

Here's a round up of today's fun, fascinating and intriguing news leftovers.

iPad cupcake topper

PadGadget has published a tutorial explaining how you can make your very own iPad cupcake topper ideal for Valentine's Day.

Using icing, piping gel, a paintbrush, scissors and an edible print out of an iPad home screen, you can surprised your Apple loving partner with an iPad-themed cupcake. To find out how, click here.

Apple knocked off top spot by Amazon in 2013's Harris Poll RQ Study

Apple has been given second place in the corporate reputations rankings for the 14th Annual Harris Poll RQ Study, beaten only by Amazon.com.

The study asks more than 14,000 members of the public to measure the reputations of the 60 most visible companies in the country.

This year's study saw Apple fall into second place after Amazon climbed up from fourth to first.

The Walt Disney Company, Google, Coca-Cola, Sony, Samsung and Microsoft are also among the top 15.

User satisfaction survey accused of attacking Apple

A user satisfaction survey conducted by OnDevice Research has been accused of attacking Apple after the iPhone 5 came in last.

PCMag.com's John C. Dvorak writes that OnDevice's survey of more than 320,000 smartphone users is "ludicrous."

The survey concluded that the Motorola Atrix HD was the phone that users were most satisfied by, with the Motorola Droid Razr M, HTC Rezound 4G and Samsung Galaxy Note II preceding the smartphone in last place: Apple's iPhone 5.

"The survey was clearly conducted to put Apple in a bad light," wrote Dvorak. You can see the results of the survey here.

Steve Jobs depicted as Russian General in new portrait

A slightly odd portrait of Steve Jobs ad a Russian Army General is now available to buy as a print, canvas, card, case, skin or pillow from Replaceface here.

?

The original painting was created by English portrait artist George Dawe, who painted 329 portraits of the Russian generals during the Napoleonic Wars.

Now, Tumblr blog Replaceface has taken digital versions of these paintings and added celebrities to the mix, including this one of Steve Jobs, as well as George Lucas, Barack Obama, High Jackman and many more.

2012 shark attacks tie record high in US

NOAA photo library. Used with permission.

There are more shark attacks in U.S. waters than in any other region of the world.

By Megan Gannon, News Editor, LiveScience

Last year, shark attacks in the United States tied 2000's record high of 53, according to a report released this week.

Meanwhile, worldwide shark attacks and related fatalities stood at average levels in 2012, with 80 confirmed incidents, seven of them deadly.

The most unprovoked attacks ? 26 ? occurred in Florida, followed by 10 in Hawaii, five each in California and South Carolina, and two in North Carolina, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. Georgia, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Puerto Rico each had one incident. Just one of the U.S. shark attacks, on a surfer in California, was fatal.

The 2012 numbers for the United States mark a big increase from the 31 unprovoked attacks recorded in 2011. Researcher George Burgess, who maintains the attack file, says such an upswing can often be blamed on human factors, including "changes in our behavior, changes in our abundance, or an overt shark-attracting product of something that we're doing."

Burgess adds that it's not feasible to launch a "Jaws"-style revenge campaign as a prevention strategy, as officials in Western Australia did last year after a string of attacks on beachgoers. (Rumors of a so-called rogue man-eating shark spread at the time, though scientists said the more likely reason for the string of attacks came from different great whites that were following the annual migration of whales up the western Australian coast.)

"The concept of 'let's go out and kill them' is an archaic approach to a shark attack problem, and its opportunities for success are generally slim-to-none," Burgess explained in a statement. "It's mostly a feel-good revenge ? like an 'eye for an eye' approach ? when in fact you're not likely to catch the shark that was involved in the situation. The shark that was involved in the situation also isn't necessarily likely to do it again."

Instead, humans could reduce risks by avoiding known areas where, and times when, sharks are most common, and where danger is at its highest, Burgess suggests.

Researchers tend to emphasize that humans pose a much bigger threat to sharks than sharks do to people. Burgess noted that up to 70 million sharks are killed every year in fisheries, with the shark finning industry especially taking a toll on the fishes' population. Sharks are apex predators that help balance ecosystems in the world's oceans, and besides overfishing, they're threatened by pollution and habitat loss.

You can now buy things with just two tweets

Thanks to a partnership between American Express and Twitter, you can now connect your credit card to your social media account and make purchases by tweeting special hashtags. What could possibly go wrong with this arrangement?

In theory, the whole system is fairly simple. You connect your American Express card to your Twitter account. After that one-time setup, you just tweet a special hashtag ? such as #BuyAmexGiftCard25, which indicates you want to buy a $25 American Express Gift Card ? and you'll get a response containing a confirmation hashtag from @AmexSync. Tweet that second hashtag and your purchase will be confirmed and shipped.

The new purchase process is an expansion of AmexSync, a program which previously allowed folks to claim discounts and special offers by linking their American Express cards to their Twitter accounts and then tweeting certain hashtags. (You can still continue grabbing deals with this method, but now you can also just skip straight to the actual purchasing process.)

We've reached out to American Express for more details about the new AmexSync purchase process because we imagine that there is room for abuse. What happens if someone retweets a tweet with one of those special purchase-triggering hashtags? What if they do the same thing to a tweet with the confirmation hashtag? An American Express spokesperson reassures NBC News that the AmexSync Twitter bots are capable of tracking whether you're the one who originally tweeted a hashtag and anyone who retweets it will simply get a reply promoting the offer (rather than a purchase confirmation).

No word as to whether American Express is working on a way to avoid late-night drunk-tweeting sessions before they get expensive.

Notre Dame Football: What Ever Happened to Gunner Kiel?

When Notre Dame landed 5-star quarterback Gunner Kiel, the Irish fan base let out a collective sigh of relief. At at a towering?6'4" and 220 pounds, Kiel was going to be the white knight of Brian Kelly's offense, leading the Irish out of an?unprecedented stretch of?mediocrity.??

Kiel's?journey?to South Bend was arduous. He initially?committed?to Indiana University, then LSU, where, according to?Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun Times, he?failed to show up for early enrollment that January and switched one final time to the Irish.?

This did not sit well with Tigers head coach?Les Miles. According to?Steve Megargee of Rivals.com, the miffed coach?told a booster group that he "did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to lead a program," without mentioning Kiel by name.?

Even Kiel?acknowledged his indecisiveness, admitting to Lazerus that he had been?"dumb" during recruiting and couldn't make up his mind about which team to commit to.?

All of that was supposed to be behind the?Columbus, Indiana native when he enrolled at Notre Dame, the heir apparent to the quarterback position, which at that time was occupied by a struggling Tommy Rees.

But a little talked about 3-star recruit named?Everett?Golson, just a year ahead of Kiel, was to change the course of history when he helmed the Irish through their most memorable season in a generation. Winning all 12 of their regular season games, the Fighting Irish went on to the BCS National Championship and Golson cemented his reputation as dynamic quarterback. ?

With all of his?success?last season, there is little debate that Golson will continue in the starting position this fall.?

    Will Kiel transfer?

  • Not till after this season.

  • At some point this season.

  • Never. He's sticking with the Irish.

?

So what exactly happened to Kiel?

The simple answer is Golson. Like Jeremy Irons famous quote about?success?in the film Margin Call, "Be first, be smarter, or cheat"?and Golson came first. The second option for Kiel is to be smarter??and Golson does have some room for improvement? but dethroning the?incumbent quarterback will be an uphill battle for Kiel that will also require a regression on Golson's part.?

Should Golson continue to improve, Kiel will be in his final year of eligibility?before he would inherit the starting position.?

"I think about it a little bit," he said to Lazerus about the situation. "But at the same time, I'm happy where I'm at, and I'm more than happy to be with this team and to be in the national championship. Just to get the privilege to be here, it's second to none."

This has lead many to speculate that Kiel will transfer, although when asked if he had any intentions to do so by Lazerus he said "not at the moment."?Others feel Kiel will stick around next season, resulting in a potential?quarterback controversy. Golson, for his part, expressed?ambivalence?about?the situation.?

"I think Gunner has the same spirit that I do, of being a competitor," he said to Lazerus. "I think the guy that I am, I'm not going to have animosity toward Gunner just because he's competing for the spot. I want to help out the next man just as much as I could."

Kiel also caused a minor scandal in January when, according to Tyler Brett?of rantsports.com?he tweeted about the Manti Te'o scandal.?

    Gunner Kiel is:

  • Better than Golson but not as good as Zaire.

  • Better than both Golson and Zaire.

  • Worse than Golson and Zaire.

"Gonna need Cat Fish for this one #Nev #HelpUs"

The tweet was quickly?deleted?from his account, but no doubt drew the ire of a few of his teammates.?

Whatever his plans are for the future, Kiel will need to to remain in top form this fall if he hopes to attract the attention of Brian Kelly?or other head coaches. With Golson ahead of him and 5-star QB recruit Malik Zaire just a year behind him, Kiel will have to channel a level of skill that has?thus far?eluded?him as he begins his first year of?eligibility?this fall.?

The War for Corporate Cash Hoards Has Begun ... - Yahoo! Finance

David Einhorn suing Apple (AAPL) over how the company's plans to eliminate the possibility of preferred shares was the first shot in a war between management and shareholders over cash on the balance sheet.

Corporations started hoarding cash in earnest after the financial crash of 2008. There is more than $3.5 trillion on American balance sheets at this point, but dividend yields at 2.1% in 2012 are historically about average. Corporations argue that much of the cash is held overseas or needed as insurance against the next downturn. Shareholders argue that they are the real owners of the cash and as such deserve a say in how the money gets used.

Jon Najarian, co-founder of OptionMonster.com says it's simply a matter of who can more efficiently put the money to use. "They haven't found ways to deploy and earn better income on (the cash); that's why you give it back to shareholders," he says.

Najarian touches on the heart of the matter. Efficient market investors argue that cash is already "priced in" to share prices. Under this theory, financial engineering like that proposed by Einhorn is akin to thinking Apple would be bigger or larger, depending on how it's sliced.

What's actually priced into stocks is the amount of cash on balance sheets as a function of how that money is used. In growth industries with massive capex needs, cash gives a company the flexibility to exploit opportunity. In slower growth environments cash being held at 2 or 3% with a dividend to match doesn't offer any premium from the market at all.

Einhorn's plan shows but one way for companies to get around the potentially disastrous tax implications of a straight dividend. As Najarian observes, the distribution of preferred stock would give existing shareholders a choice on payout without having to pay extra cash on the initial transaction.

Einhorn's suit is about Apple but the real issue is the need to rethink the standard "buyback and dividend" model of returning cash to shareholders. Buybacks create no organic growth and seem to underperform the broader market. Dividend yields aren't high enough to create a real source of income for risk adverse investors.

The model is broken. It's time for Corporate America either use their cash or figure out a way to give back to the owners.

NYT: Apple experimenting with wrist-worn iOS devices using curved glass (updated)

NYT Apple experimenting with wristworn iOS devices using curved glass

Rumors of Apple building a watch-like device have existed since time immemorial -- they've built up the same near-mythical status that the iPhone did pre-2007, or a TV set does today. The New York Times, however, claims that the watch concept exists as more than just some fan art. Reportedly, Apple has been "experimenting" with wrist-wearable devices that would run iOS and use curved glass. Other details are left to feverish speculation, although the OS choice suggests it would be more than just a glorified iPod nano watch. Before we get too excited, we'd do well to remember that any testing in a design lab doesn't equate to production plans: the company might well scrap its work before it ever becomes public, if it's indeed real to start with. Still, there have been enough advances in flexible displays and miniaturization that the notion of connected, wearable Apple gear is no longer as far-fetched as it once seemed.

Update: Not to be left out, the Wall Street Journal has made a similar claim. It adds that Apple has explored possibilities with its contract manufacturer Foxconn, although there's not much more to learn at this stage.
